Emma Coker was born in 1872 in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England to Frederick Coker and Elizabeth (Carter) Coker. Her birth was registered in Peterborough in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Carter.^[1]

In 1881 Emma Coker (age 8, Scholar) lived at Jessamine Grove in Peterborough St John The Baptist with her father Frederick (38, Blacksmith), mother Elizabeth (35), and two sisters: Elizabeth (19[10], Scholar) and Sarah J (9, Scholar).^[2]

In 1891 Emma Coker (age 18, Dressmaker) lived in Peterborough with her father Frederick (49, Blacksmith), mother Elizabeth (47), and three sisters: Eliza (20, Drapers Assistant), Jane (19), and Fanny (8, Scholar), as well as boarder W Battew (38, Clerk).^[3]
