Biography

Isaac Colby was born 6 Jul 1640 in Salisbury, Essex, Mass. His parents were Anthony COLBY and Susanna^[1] Haddon Whitridge.

Marriage Confusion

An Isaac Colby married Martha Jewett in 1667 in Amesbury, Essex, Massachusetts.^[2]

There is also a record of an Isaac Colby marrying Martha Parratt in 1669 in Haverhill/Rowley.^[3]

William Richard Cutter published that Isaac Colby married the sister of Ezekiel Jewett and that she died 13 July 1700.^[4] Several problems arise: (1) we have a marriage record for Isaac marrying Martha Jewett, (2) we find no records of a Martha Colby dying in 1700, (3) we have a record of Isaac marrying Martha Parratt in 1669, (4) Ezekiel Parrat married Faith Parratt in 1663.^[5], (5) I find no sister to Ezekiel named Martha (father Maximillan Jewett), and (6) Faith Parratt, born 1642,^[6] was sister to Martha Parratt, born 1649.^[7]

I find no records of Martha Jewett marrying a person named Parratt, nor do I find a record of Martha Colby dying before 1730. So, Ezekiel married Martha Parratt's sister, AND, Isaac Colby married Martha Jewett, though no further records cite her birth nor death.

In any event, based on marriage dates, Martha Parratt was the mother of Isaac's children:^[8]

Isaac Colby left a will in which he left everything to his wife Martha, his children to inherit after her with son Anthony getting a double portion. Wife Martha and brother Samuel to be executors. The will was probated 15 apr 1684. On 14 feb 1725/6, Martha petitioned to be released from terms of the will, and brother Samuel had died. The heirs then petitioned for a division of Isaac's property, all signing the document: Anthony Colby, Isaac Colby, Abraham Colby, Sarah and Samuel Silver, Dorothy and Samuel Hadley, Henry and Elizabeth Dow, Rebecca and Jeremiah Fowler.^[9]

Issac died before 15 apr 1684, when his will was probated.
