Ohio State Senator

Philander Blakeslee Cole was the son of James Cole and Jerusha Blakeslee. James and Jerusha were born in New York and married in 1805, later moving to Ohio in 1809.

In his application for Sons of The American Revolution, Philander's son Edward Everett Cole provided the names of his parents and grandparents and in addition stated that his great-grandparents were James Blakeslee and an unknown Travers. The said James Blakeslee was born in May of 1763 in New York and served as a private for nine months serving under various officers including David Blakeslee who made have been the father of James. Edward stated that this information was obtained from pension records and a written statement made by his father Philander in 1886.

Philander married Dorothy Barden Witter July 30. 1839 in Union County, Ohio by Benjamin Dobbins. We know from the 1900 census that they were the parents of seven children, six survived to adulthood.

Philander, still a newlywed, was listed in the 1840 census living in Marysville, the household consisted of one male and one female both between 20 and 29 years of age. One person was engaged in manufacture and trade.

In 1850 the family, living in Marysville now included three children: David Ulysses, James Blakeslee and Cornelia and Philander was an attorney.

in 1860, still in Marysville, the family now included two more children, Edward Everett and Jesse. Also in the household was Philander's half-sister Rebecca. Philander was an attorney.

In 1870 Philander was practicing law, living in Marysville. One more daughter was added, Dolly E.

In 1880 Philander and Dolly resided at 225 Main Street in Marysville. Philander was still practicing law and son Edward, 27, was also practicing law. Jessie and Dollie were at home as well.

Philander served as a representative in the Ohio State Legislature from 1852 to 1860 according to the book "Ohio Statesmen and Annals of Progress: From the Year 1788 to the Year 1900 ..." By William Alexander Taylor, Aubrey Clarence Taylor. The Zanesville Courier published December 5, 1850 named Philander as the representative for Marion and Union Counties in the Ohio State Legislature.

Children of Philander and Dorothy:

David Ulysses - served in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Captain. David became an attorney moved to Indiana where he served in the Indiana Legislature.

James Blakeslee - graduated from West point and also became an attorney.

Cornelia "Nellie" - married Charles Warren Fairbanks who was a U. S. Senator from 1897-1905 served as Vice-President of the United States under Teddy Roosevelt 1905-1919. In addition to be Second Lady of the United States, Cornelia served two terms as President of the Daughters of the American Revolution 1901-1905.

Edward Everett- practiced law in Union and Marion Counties.

Jessie- married Alexander Lowe.

Dorothy E. - married John L. Sellers.
