Biography

Isaac Cole was born in 1601 in Sandwich, St. Clements parish, just north of Dover, in the county of Kent, south-east England.[1]

His parents are said to have been Samuel Cole of Essex, England, and Margaret (Greene) Cole of Cheshire, England. However, further research shows that in all likelihood, they were too young to have had a child in 1601. Cheshire was also several days horseback ride from Kent. They have been removed as parents until further evidence can be found that they (or someone with the same names) were Isaac's parents.[2]

According to at least one family genealogy, Isaac married Joan (aka Joanne) Jones on July 25, 1631, at St. Peters church, in Sandwich, Dover, Kent, England. They had six children, two of whom were born in England before 1634. Isaac Cole was a carpenter and, given the seaside locale of his English home, very likely a ship builder. He must have been a successful craftsman because when he and his family emigrated to New England in the spring of 1634, aboard HMS "Hercules," they brought a servant girl ("Rose Tritton," of Ashford) with them.[3] The 2 children who emigrated with them were named: daughter Jane (aka Jane Anne), and son Isaac Jr.. [4]

Isaac and Joanne (Jones) Cole's six known children were:[5]

  1. Jane Anne COLE, b. ca. 1632 in Sandwich, Kent, England.
  2. Isaac COLE, b: ca. 1633 in Sandwich, Kent, England.
  3. Abraham COLE, b: 3 OCT 1636 in Charlestown, Middlesex, MA
  4. Mary COLE, b. January 1639 in Charlestown, Middlesex, MA
  5. Jacob COLE, b: 1641 in Charlestown, Middlesex, Mass. Bay
  6. Elizabeth COLE, b: 26 SEP 1643 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England

Hugh, John, Richard, and Samuel Cole all have also been attributed to Isaac Cole Sr. but are NOT proven. Research is needed to determine which, if any, ought to remain here and which should be detached.

True to his seaport upbringing, Isaac and Joanne Cole and family settled in Charlestown, Boston harbor's main port city, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England. In the 1630-40s, Charlestown was the capital of the fledgling Massachusetts Bay colony. It was later annexed by the colony's new capital, Boston.

In 1658, Isaac's wife, Joan (Joanne) Jones Cole died. Some family trees say she died in Sandwich, Kent, England, indicating she had returned there but it's equally possible she died in Massachusetts.

Isaac Cole and his children remained in New England (or returned there) and he re-married on February 1, 1659, in neighboring Woburn, Middlesex, Mass., to a woman named Jane Britton, widow of Woburn settler, James Britton.[6]

Jane's maiden name is unknown. She was married first to Mr. Eggleden in England by/about 1630 (based on marriage of daughter in 1650), by whom she had two daughters Sarah Eggleton who m. 1650 John Nutting[6] and Ruth Eggleton who m. Samuel Blodgett 1655.[6] Jane's second husband was James Britton, (this was the last name she had when she married Isaac Cole.) Isaac and Jane (Unknown) Cole had no children together.

Isaac Cole died on June 10, 1674 in Woburn, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. His widow, Jane , survived him. She died on March 10, 1687, in Woburn, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Research notes

Isaac's second wife is sometimes given as Elizabeth Jane Bennett for example Flory Coopers Tree on a now defunct site oufamilyhistory dot org, which cited Savage as the source, but review of Savage found no such information

Since Anderson has a sketch of this man in "Great Migration" I suggest this profile be based on that sketch, since this is in the Puritan Great Migration project. The PGM project uses Anderson as a basis for their profiles, unless any more current, well documented source is found.

Hi,

Removed Mary Cole (married to Richard Lowden) as his daughter, connected her to what seem to be her correct parents now :)

Greets,

Bea

The Early Genealogies of the Cole Families in America: (Including Coles and ...at google books states he came to America with two children and then they had two more children in Boston. I think the Mary Cole that traveled with them was his sister not his daughter. If I am mistaken please let me know and if I'm not please show Mary Cole Frost as his sister. I will remove mine as a descendent . Thank you

Thank you Anne B. for your note (below). In further research, I can find NO strong genealogical or primary sources that give Isaac Cole's parents. The Samuel Cole that married Margaret Green(e) was too young. I am removing them as his parents - if other profile managers object, please let me know with your sources and we can decide what to do.

A warning pointed out that Isaac b. 1601 was listed as son of Margaret b. 1600. There is no record here listing his parents. In addition several of the attached children don't belong.

Isaac m. Jane widow of James Britton. She had been married before to Unknown Iggledon (not Stephen). She and Iggleden had two daughters Ruth m. Blodgett and Sarah m. Nutting. Elizabeth (Bennett) wife of Stephen Iggleton (from Biddenden) and then wife of Joseph Patchen is a different person.
