Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Jane (Cole) George was a Virginia colonist.

It is currently believed that "this" Jane Cole may have been born around 1605, or possibly later, in Essex, England; maybe in or close to Tillingham. Some online trees and sites falsely claim or assume that she was born in the colony of Virginia, when immigration evidence suggests otheriwse.

There appears a concensus across several online family trees that she married John George on 4 Nov 1623 in Tillingham, Essex - however no primary reference source (parish baptism record or similar) has been found thus far which verifies that date and place. Other sources suggest a marriage date of 1632 or 1635. [Please add primary reference sources if located.]

What does appear reasonably verified is that Jane and her husband John George arrived in Virginia in 1638, and that a Thomas George that arrived the same year may possibly be their son.[1]

The birth of a daughter Sarah George in 1645 suggests that Jane's death date was after that. One PM believes that Jane may have died before her her husband John George, since John George's widow Ann George (likely his second wife) is shown marrying another in the note below.

"Bertram or Bertrand SERVANT had child Frances SERVANT who married John GEORGE in 1696, son of Col. John GEORGE of Nansemond, whose widow, Anne, married Col. John LEAR aft 1678. Anne died before 1688, as Col. John LEAR married again in 1688."[2] (Note: This record shows John GEORGE's father as Col. John George but information from the Marty Grant's website suggests that his parents were Isaac George and Hester Fawdon. - mgp)

This suggests that Jane (Cole) George certainly died before 1677/78, and perhaps several years prior. In the absence of any reliable source related to her death, burial or will, a working date of death of 1870 has been assumed for now.

Why is death date set at 1638 with 2 daus. both named Sarah born after that?

(I'm sticking with Ann (surname unk.) as only known wife and mother of Isaac, Rebecca and Sarah until proven otherwise; the sources cited here not being reliable)

Cole-2780 and Cole-67 appear to represent the same person because: same father, mother is Mary Mott as father did not marry Hester until after 1616. Birth is an estimate on both profiles
