Biography

Hugh, the son of Hugh and Deborah Buckland Cole, was born at Swansea on 30 May 1683.[1] Also growing up in the neighborhood was his future bride, Martha Luther. They were married in Bristol County on December 13, 1705.[2] They had seven known children:[3]

  1. Hugh IV, b: Sep 19, 1706, d: 1785, m: 13 Aug 1730 to Jane Sisson
  2. 'Lieutenant' Nehemiah, b: Feb 23, 1708 d: 1753, m: 26 Oct 1732 to Judith Eastabrook
  3. Joseph L., b: May 3, 1716, d: 25 Jun 1785, m: 1 May 1738 to Freelove Mason
  4. Martha, b: 1718; m: 16 Dec 1742 to Edward Hoar
  5. Peleg, b: Apr 5, 1720, m: 21 Apr 1743 to Pricilla Winslow
  6. David, b: Apr 2, 1723, m: 1746 to Anna Childs
  7. Deborah, b: Apr 6, 1727; d: unmarried

The town of Warren was originally part of Swansea, but was annexed to Rhode Island and became a town in 1747.

For a while the Puritan Church was a "state power" and would tolerate no other opinions regarding religion. Roger Williams opposed this and moved to Providence, RI where he established the first Baptist Church in America in 1638. The Coles of Swansea chose to attend the Baptist Church, as did many of their descendants for years to come.

Hugh Cole died on June 14, 1753 and is buried at Kickemuit Cemetery.[4]
