Biography

Samuel Cole was born 3 March 1754 in Boxford.[1]

He married, 11 September 1776, Anna Tillotson, in Haverhill, New Hampshire.[2]

They settled in Orford, where they appear to have had at least four daughters by 1790[3]:

  1. Deborah, bapt. 17 February 1782 or '83.[4]
  2. Bethiah, bapt. June 1784[4]; m. John Jones, 3 March 1801 in Randolph, Vermont.[5]
  3. _____
  4. _____
  5. Achsah, b. 4 January 1792, Randolph, Vermont.

Residing in Randolph at the time of the 1800 census are, beside Samuel: one female betw. 16-44, assumed to be Anna (Tillotson); two females betw. 16-25; one female betw. 10-15; and one female under 10.[6]

Samuel Cole married second, Sarah Hartshorn 10 January 1808 in Stanstead, Quebec,[7] to which he removed.

Children, born in Stanstead:

  1. Samuel, 8 February 1815.
  2. Adaline, b. 3 March 1817.
  3. Benjamin, b. 6 January 1819.
  4. Simeon, b. 24 July 1829.

Samuel Cole died 13 April 1849 at Stanstead, Quebec.[8]

According to the deposition of Benjamin Stewart and Solomon Steele in Samuel's pension file dated 3 July 1855, Samuel Cole, U.S. pensioner, died 'a few years since' and was buried on the farm of Solomon Steele in Stanstead, where his widow Sarah continued to reside.[9]

There is a second memorial page for Samuel which places his burial at Beebe Cemetery in Beebe Junction, where there is indeed part of a gravestone.[10] There was obviously more to the marker. Whether that part of Steele's farm became what is now known as Beebe Cemetery, or Samuel was re-interred there after Sarah died 3 April 1861,[11] or a perhaps the broken off top placed there as a cenotaph, is not known.
