Biography:
John was born in 1835. John Cole ... He passed away in 1928.
John Henrif Cole, son of Pierre Charbonneau and Emilie Hebert came to America from Canada -- when he took a translated version of his last name -- along with a Doctor Hart sometime around 1860 and settled in New Orleans, LA where they practiced medicine for an additonal 18 months to gain more training. After coming to Tylertown, MS and starting up practice together, Dr. Hart was struck by lightning and killed. The bolt of lightning also burned their office to the ground. Fortunately John was "on call" at the time as typhoid fever was raging in this country at the time.
That same year (about 1863), Dr. Cole married a widow with 3 children, an Alice Cornelia Quin Stewart, with whom he lived for 20 years and helped raise her children. On Jan 27, 1863, Dr. Cole and Alice B. Cole bought 80 acres from Josephus Sandifer at Tylertown. They were divorced on July 12, 1883. There were no children of this marriage.
The author of these notes reflects "It is ironic that some 53 years later, Dr. Cole's daughter would marry the son of William Josephus Sandifer, and from this marriage would evolve our families."
The 1880 U.S. Census for Pike Co., MS listed a John H. Cole that was either 31 or 51 yrs of age from Canada, and just below him was a Henry F. or Harry F. Hart that was either 40 or 60 from Maine. This census was so bad that it was very difficult to read.
Dr. Cole married Nancy Campbell Smith on Dec. 4, 1895 at Magnolia, MS. Dr. Cole delivered Nancy when she was born and then later had six children with her. On Nov 7, 1896 Dr. Cole and Nancy bought 40 acres from M. A. Rushing and sold this to L. M. Johnson. On Dec 8, 1897 he and Nancy bought the land back for $300 and built the house where all of their children were born. Later he sold this land again (Nov 18, 1912) to Collins Brothers for $2,300. They then moved to McComb, MS on Nov 22, 1912 and lived there for 6 years before returning to Tylertown, where they lived in the home he had left his first wife, Alice. Nancy divorced Dr. Cole on May 25, 1926.
Dr. Cole died at the State Hospital in Jackson, MS. The author explains, "He became very senile and the family felt like they could not care for him. In those days they felt that a person that could not recognize his loved ones and could not find his way home must be mentally ill. He had got to where he would wander away from home and not be able to find his way back. He was living with his daughter Lillian at the time he was committed.
