Biography

Julia Ann was born about 1809. Juliann Cole ... She passed away in 1910. Dates in Julia's obituary do not agree with dates on her headstone. [1]

Derryl Albert Dumermuth (1924-2010) wrote a genealogy in 1968 and distributed it to relatives. These comments were included: Julia Ann became known to her many descendants as “Grannie Clark”. She has been described as “small in stature, but rugged, and could still dance a jig after she passed her 90th birthday”. Many are the stories, some perhaps nothing but fables, that have been told about this wiry little woman; but my favorite is the report that at age 64, Grannie Clark married one “Jiggy” Davis, a 19 year old boy she met in Oklahoma. My informant claims the marriage didn’t last long – probably young Davis couldn’t keep up with her. [2]

Obituary

IOWA WOMAN, AGED 101, IS DEAD

Mother of Family of Twelve Children Passes Away.

Forest City, Iowa, July 27 -- One of the oldest persons in north Iowa, Mrs. Anna Cole-Clark, died at her home here, aged 101. She was the wife of the late George B. Clark, whom she wed in 1830, and with whom she moved to Clayton county in 1856, and shortly after her husband died. Mrs. Clark lived a number of years in Nebraska and in 1887 came to this city, where she has resided since. Notwithstanding her great age, she had retained her mental faculties unimpaired till near the end. Not often ill during her life, her health was good until three months before she died, the remote cause being lagrippe. She came of a long lived family, her father attaining the age of 104 when he died. She was the mother of twelve children, seven of whom survive, all residing her except two sons, Isaac Clark of Omaha, and Salem Clark of Billings, Mont. She has been a member of the Baptist church for over seventy-five years. [3]
