Leander was born about 1835. He is the son of Josiah Cole.
Leander W. Cole served in Company C of the 3rd Regiment Texas Cavalry, CSA,; also known as South Kansas Texas Regiment of Mounted Volunteers. He was wounded at the Battle Oak Hills, Missouri (aka the Battle of Wilson's Creek), on 10 August, 1861. He died two days later on the 12th in Springfield, Missouri. He was the first Civil War veteran from Cherokee County, Texas, to be killed in action.
