Dear Tom: There are 2 churches in the Askeaton Parish/records. See link above.
BALLYSTEEN has the church called St. Patrick's. It was built in 1861.
St. Mary's in Askeaton was built in 1850.
There was a church in Ballycanana (townland next to BALLYSTEEN) that was built in 1799, it had a thatched roof and held 400 people. (standing) The way I understand the records: They are from Askeaton Parish. Not the town of Askeaton. There are 12 townlands in Askeaton Parish. BALLYSTEEN, Ballycanana, Ballinvoher, Beagh, Ballinacourty, Milltown, Ballyaglish, Galway, Issane, Ballyvaddock, Mitchelstown.
Ballinvoher comes from the Irish, Baile an Bhothair, meaning the townland on the road. The old road did not go as far as Beagh Castle - Ireland Beagh castle.. The civil survey in 1656 lists the owner as Wm. Roche of Limerick City. In 1840 all 386 acres were the property of the Earl of Dunraven. The Earl's agent was Mr. Fitzgerald who sublet to 30 tenants 'at will' from 13-26 schillings an acre. The soil is described as clay. It was considered suitable to grow wheat, oats and potatoes. The most frequently occurring names were Lynch(now long gone) and O'Shaughnessy(still there). Other names in the townland included Ranahan, O'Carroll, O'Keefe, Parker, Ross, Hanly, Nestor, Holland Bath, Kinerk, Hayes, Cleary, Shanahan, Meskell, Noonan, O'Connell, Gallagher, Murphy, and Kiely. Townland Pop.1841 Pop 1851 Famine< Pop 1861 Pop 1871 Ballinvoher 253 164 35% 150 119 So, the 30 year decrease was 53% and the emigration rate 18%. Hope all this helps. I am probably the Nash in your records. There were NASH'S in Ballycanana. Warmest Regards, Dawn Nash Durbin Endos@aol.com
From the book 'Meet Shieldsville':

They had two children, Nellie, and Jimmie. In 1876 Mrs. Coleman died and in 1877 Mr. Coleman married Miss Elizabeth Brennen of Kilkenny . Their family: Ed, Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth, Ann, and Peter. Mr. Coleman was a merchant in the village of Shieldsville and sold to J. C. Carpenter in the 90's. Thomas Coleman and his father Cornelius, died in 1898. Honora Coleman married Daniel Culhane.
