Nantucket town records dated 4 March 1663 say, "It was agreed that John Coleman shall have land layed out on the north side of the Lot of Robert Barnard for the use of the said John Coleman his father Thomas Coleman having given half of his accommodation on the island half the house lot to be layed out in the place before mentioned for John Coleman, the foresaid Thomas Coleman doth Lay down one half of his Lot already Layd out."
John's house lot was a little west of the Elihu Coleman house, comprised ten acres and extended southeast to Robert Barnard's lot.
His widow Joanna was appointed administratrix of his estate on 20 August 1715. The heirs were eldest son John, Thomas, Isaac, Jeremiah, Solomon, Benjamin, Phoebe Cathcart and Abigail Tisdale. The probate was settled on 7 December 1715.
He is buried at Founders Burial Ground, Nantucket, Nantucket, Massachusetts, USA
