John Marshall Coleman was born on 30 May 1818 in Spotsylvania, Virginia, son of Rev. Robert Goodwin Coleman Sr (1788 - 1840) and Caroline (Harris) Coleman (1789 - 1839).
His siblings were:

- Robert Goodwin Coleman Jr (~1816 - 1895)
- Spencer G. Coleman (~1817 - ~1890)
John married Maria Ellen Lipscomb (~1815 - 1897). Their daughter was Sarah L (Coleman) Dreyer (1848 - 1881).
John died on 16 May 1849 in St. Louis, Missouri aged 30.
