Various Notes

This is a work in progress! I will be adding to my notes pages - some before the Holiday Season - mostly after! NOTES - Lea Walker Sullivan 16 Dec 2022: From Part Two Direct Antecedents, Coleman Family History, Colemanfamilystory. files, wordpress.com 2007, and the book The Robert Coleman Family from Virginia to Texas 1652 - 1965 by Judge James P. Coleman who was also a well respected geneaolgist. A few statements that stood out to me for consideration here. "It is believed that Robert Coleman b approximately in 1622 in England, arrived in Charles City County, Virginia in 1637 was one of four brothers to arrive in Virginia from, England. In his book, James P. Coleman states they were William, Robert, Thomas and Nicholas (Coleman). The last three brothers came to Virginia "together"presumably came to join Robert Coleman, who was there by 1652. This Robert had four sons, Robert Coleman Jr., William Coleman, Jr., John Coleman and Warner Coleman. Given that Robert names his William "Jr" rather than William "Sr", it could be concluded that such was done to differentiate Robert's son from Robert's brother of the same name." "In addition, William's second wife, Faith, relinquished her dower rights to the remaining portion of Haycocks in 1719 and her name in William Coleman's will of 1743 provides the link to positively identify William of Prince Georg as later William of Amelia.

This Wills and Deeds documentation of 1710 was not available to Judge James P. Coleman in his research for the book, The Robert Coleman Family from Virginia to Texas 1652 - 1965. written in 1965. Prince George County Virginia Wills and Deeds of 1710 - 1713 were stolen during the Civil War and were not returned to Prince George until 1991, well after Judge James P. Coleman's book was written. Judge Coleman did not know that William Coleman, Jr was the son of Robert Coleman."

“Some genealogists believe that Richard and Rebecca Claiborne’s son, Robert, was the Mobjack Bay, Gloucester County, Robert Coleman and not the Charles City County Robert Coleman. This belief is not correct according to Sherrianne Coleman Nicol, author of The Coleman Family of Mobjack Bay Virginia.”

Coleman Genealogist Fred Krauss Notes:
# Event: Note Believe that William Coleman was a son of Joseph Coleman of Gloucester. No recorded or documented evidence of the relationship has been found but the name of the children lend strength to this.
# Event: Note 19 MAY 1712 Robert Bolling surveyed 100 acres on the west side of Namozine creek, below the path for William Coleman. This creek was then in Prince George, but since 1753 has been the boundary between Dinwiddie and Amelia. (SOURCE: Prince George VA Deeds 751)
# Event: Note 21 MAY 1712 185 acres were surveyed for William Coleman on the East side of the great branch of Whiponock Creek, now in northwestern Dinwiddie County but near the Amelia line.
# Event: Note 6 DEC 1715 154 acres were surveyed for William Coleman, Sr. on the West side of Namozine. (Prince George Co., VA Deeds 753)
# Event: Deed 9 NOV 1719 William Coleman of Prince George County conveyed to Robert Munford 118 acres bounded on one side 'by land which formerly belonged to Francis Coleman. He signed by mark 'W' and Drury Bolling was a witness. (Deeds 367 Prince George Co., VA.)
# Event: Deed 13 MAY 1725 William Coleman of Prince George Co., VA conveyed a tract of land to John Coleman. This was on Whipponock Creek, in present Dinwiddie. (Prince George Co., VA Deeds 798)

My records from a relative with DNA following William's line shows that the siblings and parents for this William Coleman are not related to him, except for his sister listed as Elizabeth Frances Tucker. This William is from the Charles City County/Prince George County/Amelia County Coleman line, beginning with Robert Coleman of Charles City County. He is not the same person as the Robert Coleman of Gloucester County or Mobjack Bay.

The early Virginia records show that Robert of Charles City County (Virginia) arrived in Virginia at a different time than Robert of Gloucester County (Virginia). Furthermore, many family trees online for the Gloucester County (Virginia) Robert Coleman line mistakenly include Faith Godfrey and William Coleman as an unproven match to the William Coleman in their line. They are not correct. This profile also mentions a possible father for William as Joseph Coleman - what is the proof for this? My family records that I received by a relative who shares a common ancestor show that it happens to be one of William's sons. We both also match via DNA to the Charles City County/Prince George County/Amelia County line of Colemans and do not have any matches to the other line that matches these parents and siblings (other than his sister Frances) that are currently attached to his profile. I'm currently searching for the exact proof of his parents within this Charles City Coleman group but do not want to add anything until I have several citations available. I don't want to delete anyone else's work, but suggest that we begin to clean up the profile so that it is more accurate. Thanks!

I've been trying to clean up this line for several years, but it has become a nightmare and actually tied into other lines I have been working on that currently bee bogging me down while I clean those up to get to this one. Any help appreciated.
Coleman-1028 and Coleman-795 appear to represent the same person because: Husband of Faith Godfrey, mentioned in his Will
