Biography

Samuel Coleman was born about 1706, probably in Gloucester County, Virginia to John and his wife, Ann Coleman.

Children of Father John Coleman by first wife, Margaret:

  1. James Coleman 1693–1746
  2. Daniel Coleman 1695–1746

Children of Father, John and his second wife, Ann:

  1. John II Coleman 1698–
  2. Richard Coleman 1702–1791
  3. Samuel Coleman 1706–1748

Samuel Coleman married Ann Mourning Christian, daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (New) Christian about 1731 in Goochland County, Virginia. Ann's Father, Thomas Christian sold 175 acres on Beaverdam Creek to Samuel Coleman on the 17th of July 1731.

Children of Samuel and Ann Coleman were:

  1. James Jeremiah Coleman, SGT in REV WAR 1733–1788
  2. Samuel Coleman 1735–1803
  3. Daniel Coleman
  4. John Coleman

Samuel died between when he wrote his will on April 1, 1748 and when it was proved on September 20, 1748.

Deed

From his father-in-law Thomas Christian:

  • 17 Jun 1731, Thomas Christian to Samuel Coleman, both of Goochland County, £25, 175 acres bound by Beaverdam Creek
witnesses: Robert Christian, John Cox, John Coleman
20 Jul 1731 Court: Rebecca, wife of Thomas Christian relinquishes dower right, Teste: Henry Wood, Cl. Cur.[1]

Will

  • 1 Apr 1748, Samuel Coleman "being of sick and weak body but of perfect mind and memory"
    - to dear and loving wife Ann: one young cow, my land, and my whole estate during her life or widowhood, after her death or marriage to be divided as follows:
    - to sons James and Samuel Coleman: land where I now dwell divided equally
    - to sons Jno. and Dan'l: my blacksmith tools
    - after debts paid the residue to be divided equally among all my children
Executors: wife Ann and Jacob Oglesby
witnesses: Robt. Woodson, Jno. Wright, John Pryor
20 Sep 1748 Court: will proved by the three witnesses, and admitted to record[2]

Research Notes

It's been repeated that the date of the deed from Thomas Christian to Samuel Coleman was his and Ann's "wedding day". However the deed neglects to mention their marriage or Ann at all. Their marriage record is missing from the Douglas Register (although their son Samuel's marriage to Ann Wright in 1756 is there), and from the Goochland County Marriage Bonds 1730-1853 microfilmed and available online. It seems that the deed date has been chosen as an approximaton of their wedding date.

After researching my files and comparing against WikiTree it appears that some changes were made to WikiTree in 2021. I have no knowledge of Spilbys but that’s not to say they aren’t factual. It appears Anonymous(Schuyler) Campos was very busy making changes and perhaps didn’t update the bio. Either way I must apologize for not locking my record.

I am going to stick with John Coleman b 1666 m. To Ann Coleman with son Samuel b 1706. John Marries Ann Coleman in 1702 and her maiden name is Coleman according to U.S. and International Marriage Records 1560-1900. Although he was married to a Margaret and perhaps one other but I didn’t go any further than what information I have at hand. I hope this helps. Phil Sandifer

Phil, my apologies. I made changes based off of information obtained in Ancestry.com but after ordering the book "Trails West - The Watsons and Walkers, American Pioneers by Roberta Watson Richardson", you are correct the parents are John and Ann, not Robert and Mary. Is there any way that you can unlink from Coleman-353 and Clayton-181, and link to the correct parents again? I've also noted there is a duplicate for Samuel Coleman [Coleman-343] you might want to merge these.
in Samuel Coleman (Coleman-4764) bio you have Samuel's parents as John Coleman 1666-1710 and his wife, Ann (UNKnown maiden name), But you have Samuel Coleman (Coleman-4764) connected as son of Robert Spilsby Coleman and Mary (Clayton) Coleman. Which are Samuel Coleman (Coleman-4764) parents?

Samuel Coleman (Coleman-4764) is my 6th great grandfather.
