Margaret Coleman is a part of US Black heritage.

Margaret Coleman was born in 1914. She was the oldest daughter ofJoshua Coleman and Joylette Lowe Her younger sister, Katherine, would win recognition as a mathematician at NASA.

HAMPTON — Miss Margaret R. Coleman died peacefully at home on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002. Born in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., on Dec. 28, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Joshua and Joylette Coleman. She had resided in Hampton for the past year.

Miss Coleman received her Bachelor's degree from West Virginia State College and held Master's degrees from Colorado State and Columbia Universities. She retired after teaching over 40 years in the public schools of Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs. She had traveled extensively in Canada, Europe and the Far East.

A life member of St. James Methodist Church, she had served diligently and lovingly in many capacities, both locally and statewide; she had been the church organist for many years. Miss Coleman had affiliated with Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church since moving to the area, and was active in the Edith Bland Circle, Bible Study and the Agape Fellowship.

Survivors include her sister, Katherine Johnson (James) of Hampton, Va.; brother, Charles Coleman (Mary Alice) of Greensboro, N.C.; three nieces, Joylette Hylick (Lawrence) of Mt. Laurel, N.J., Constance Garcia of Hampton and Katherine Moore of Newark, N.J.; six grand nieces and nephews and three great-grand nieces and nephews.
