Biography

Joseph was born in England and emigrated to Roxborough Township, Stormont, Ontario, and married Nancy McBain, before 1836.

1851: the census lists Joseph (farmer), Nancy, William, Alexander, Ellen, Duncan, Nancy, and David, all of the Church of England, living in a shanty in Roxborough; they seem to be the only Colemans listed in Stormont or Glengarry Counties.

1861: Joseph (farmer), Anne, William, Alex, Janet, Ellen, Duncan, Anne, David, Daniel, John, and Mary Jane lived in Roxborough, now in a 1-story log house. Janet and Ellen were Catholic and everyone else was Methodist.

An 1862 map has J. Coleman living on the west half of Lot 9 in the 4th concession, Roxborough (the east half was occupied by J. Majorrison). In 1879 that lot was occupied by a M. Marjerison.[1]

Joseph died before 1871, when the census lists Anne (widowed) living with Duncan, David, Daniel, John, and Mary in Roxborough.

According to an 1879 atlas, ‘Mrs. Coleman’ owned lot B, concession II of Roxborough township.[2]

Joseph and Nancy had at least nine children. Some family trees give them another daughter, Janet Coleman (bc 1839 Roxborough), who was actually their daughter-in-law.

Research Notes

All records give Joseph’s birthplace as England, except his sons John and Daniel’s death certificates, which state that Joseph and his wife Annie were born in Scotland.

A Joseph Coleman, son of William and Elizabeth, was baptized on 26 Jul 1812 in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England.[3] The Familysearch Family Tree[4] and many Ancestry trees connect this record to this Joseph, but there were several other Joseph Colemans born in England around the right time.

Joseph settled next to John Marjerrison and Mary Margaret Brown, who were from Yorkshire, England and emigrated to Ontario around the same time. Could they have known each other in the old country? Crerar-203 17:50, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
