The following notes were taken from a book called: "Pages of the Past" -- History of Shell Lake -- Mont Nebo Districts (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan that is). There is a copy of this book in the museum in the town of Shell Lake. Included with these notes in the book is a photo of Sarah and William Colgan.
COLGAN FAMILY
Sage family arrived in Shell Lake from Ontario in 1912. George Sage, age 66, homesteaded one mile west and 3/4 mile south from Shell Lake. William Sage (Will) homesteaded across the road from his brother on the west side. George's daughter, Gertrude Florence, arrived from Ontario in 1916 to help her father homestead his farm.
The Colgan family arrived in Shell Lake from Ontario in 1914. William Henry Colgan and Sarah Elizabeth and 6 children; David, Charlie, Maude, Elmer, Alice, and Ethel homesteaded on the east side of Little Shell Lake. David Colgan (oldest son) joined the army in 1915, was in the 53rd battalion and served in France. He returned to Shell Lake after being discharged in 1919. William and Sarah Colgan left Shell Lake in the early 1920's to live in The Pas, Manitoba.
DAVID COLGAN FAMILY
David married Gertrude Sage in 1923. They worked both Sage homesteads while living with George Sage. Will Sage died from the flu in the middle 1920's. He left his homestead to his niece Gertrude. George Sage died in 1927. Both brothers are buried in the Shell Lake cemetery. David and Gertrude had a son, Vernon Edmund in 1927. The family left in December of 1927 to live in The Pas. They returned to Shell Lake in 1933 to work their farm for five years. Vernon went to Shell Lake Rural School with his Alaskan Sleigh and dogs during the winter months. He also took his mother to church with his dog team. Vernon spent many hours going from farm to farm with his dog team selling Christmas cards, garden seeds, and Gold Seal needle and thread.
The Colgan family moved into town of Shell Lake to live in the Cornell's home for two years. Then in 1940 they left Shell Lake again to live in The Pas. David and Gertrude and son moved to BC in 1942 where Gertrude died in 1962. David died in 1965. Vernon is still residing in BC (Kamloops), is married to Helen Nurmi and has one son and one daughter.
