Biography

Calista married James Jeffrey in October 1875 in Essex County.^[1] She was listed as Calista Collard in the 1881 census, home with her parents five years after her marriage, with their daughter Laura Jeffrey living with her.^[2] The following year, another child, Arta, was born. But by the following census in 1891, Calista was listed as the wife of Henry Fleming. Laura and Arta Jeffrey are living with them,^[3] while Henry and Calista have two children of their own, Jennnie and Margaret Fleming.

"A Fleming family household of at least 6 members residing in the district of Kent (Ontario) was recorded in 1901. The head of household, Henry Fleming, was born in "Scotland" in 1835. Identifying his heritage as Scotch, Henry immigrated to Canada 64 years prior in 1837 when he was 2 years old. By 1901, at the age of 66, he had an occupation that was recorded as "Farmer". Henry's wife was Calista Fleming, who was 44 years old. Calista was born in Ontario in 1857. She identified her heritage as Irish. Henry and Calista had 4 children, all girls. In 1876 the eldest girl, Laura, was born. Six years later, in 1882, when Henry was 47 years old and Calista was 25 years old their second daughter, who was named Artal, was born. Then, in 1889, with their two older daughters ages 13 years and 7 years, their third daughter, Maggie, was born. In 1901 another daughter, their fourth child, Ethalinda, was born. Thus, at the time of the 1901 census, this Fleming family household was filled with 4 daughters whose ages were 6, 11, 18, and 24 years."
This explanation misses the fact that the two oldest girls were from Calista's first marriage to James Jeffrey.
