James was born in 1752 and is the son of Zachariah Coley and Mary Patton. The Virginia census of 1782 shows living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. The next time he shows on a census is in Franklin County, Georgia beginning in 1808 and through 1811. His first wife was Elizabeth Salter Colley.There is record of his marriage to Martha King as having taken place on 13 Nov 1823 in Wilkinson County, Georgia. He acquired land in 1827 by the Georgia Land Lottery. James died in 1835.
