1737: Essex Co., VA, May 16, 1737. Joseph Collins, planter, sold to Nicholas Pampline 200 acres in Essex & King & Queen Co. for £60 & 2000 lbs. tobacco. Wife Susanna didn't relinquish dower right till June 19, 1739.

1738: Essex Co., VA, January 17, 1738. Court ordered that Philip Gatewood pay Joseph 495 lbs tobacco for twice coming & returning 7 miles from Spotsylvania Co. & for attending 3 days as an evidence for him against Thomas Johnson in a suit for assault & battery.

1741: Spotsylvania Co., VA, April 14, 1741. John Robertson sold Joseph 400 acres in the forks of the Po River for £20.

1743: Spotsylvania Co., VA, December 6, 1743. Joseph produced Governor's commission and took the oath as lieutenant of horsetroops under Capt. Joseph Hawkins.

1745: John Robertson sold 254 acres in the fork and on the north side of the Po River on May 14, 1745 to Joseph Collins, grandson, for £15. Joseph operated a mill on this land and kept the road open by direction of county court.

1750: Spotsylvania Co., VA, November 6, 1750. Joseph was presented commission and took the oath as captain of a company of foot militia in Spotsylvania Co.

1754: Spotsylvania Co., VA, November 5, 1754. Joseph Collins gave 270 acres on both sides of Robertson River to John Collins for love & affection.

1756: Spotsylvania Co., VA, December 6, 1756. Joseph Collins and wife, Susanna, sold 275 acres to Aaron Quesenburey for £50.

1757: Spotsylvania Co., VA, August 27, 1757. The Last Will And Testament Of Joseph Collins: I, Joseph Collins, of Spotsylvania ... do make this last will and testament ... I give and bequeath in the following manner. Item: I give unto my grand daughter Amy Collins one cow and calf and the sum of £5, to be paid unto her when she shall arrive at the age of 21 or on the day of her marriage. Item: I lend unto my beloved wife Susanna Collins my whole Estate both Real and Personal for and during the term of her widowhood, and after her marriage or death it is my will and desire that my Executors hereafter named do sell my whole Estate both real and personal, at public auction, and I do hereby give the money arising by the sale of my land to be equally divided between my four sons: James Collins, William Collins, Thomas Collins and Lewis Collins ... and out of the money arising by the sale of my other Estate, I give the sum of £10 to each of my daughters, Ann Wisdom, Mary Brockman, Susanna Gholson, Tabitha Gatewood, Drucilla Cook and Caty Glaze ... and if any thing remains after such legacys are paid, I give the same to be equally divided between my children: John Collins, James Collins, William Collins, Thomas Collins, Lewis Collins, Ann Wisdom, Mary Brockman, Susanna Gholson, Tabitha Gatewood, Drucilla Cook, and Caty Glaze. 1757: Spotsylvania Co., VA, Tuesday, November 1, 1757. At a Court held in this county on this date the Will of Joseph Collins was established by John Collins Sr. and Thomas Collins, two of the executors therein named and was proved by the oaths of Robert Gains and Richard Long two of the Witnesses thereto ... it is ordered to be recorded. At the time of Joseph's death, his son, James, was already in North Carolina.

1757: Spotsylvania Co., VA, November 1, 1757. John Collins Sr., Thomas Collins, John Collins Jr., and Edward Collins are held and firmly bound to ... the Court of Spotsylvania Co. in the sum of £1,000, to the payment whereof ... we bind ourselves ... jointly and severally ... The condition of the obligation is such that if the above bound John Collins Sr. and Thomas Collins, executors of Joseph Collins, deceased, do make or cause to be made, a true and perfect inventory of all and singular goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased ... do exhibit and tender ... into the County Court of Spotsylvania at such time as they shall be thereunto required ... according to law, and further do make a just and true account ... and deliver all the legacy's contained and specified in the said testament as far as the said goods, chattles and credits ... then this obligation to be void. Otherwise, to remain in full force and notice. Sealed and Delivered: John Collins Sr., Thomas Collins, John Collins Jr., and Edward Collins. Ack'd this their bond in said court to be their act and deed and is admitted to the record. (John Collins Sr. and Thomas Collins, his brother, gave bond as executors, with John's sons John Collins Jr. and Edward Collins acting as guarantors. They all would have been required to be of legal age, which was 21 at the time.)

1758: Spotsylvania Co., VA, March 8, 1758. At a Court continued and held ... the appraisement of the Estate of Joseph Collins, dec'd, is returned and admitted to the Record. Test. Wm. Waller, County Clerk.

1758: Spotsylvania Co., VA, March 9, 1758. At a Court held for ... James Collins, heir at law to Joseph Collins, dec'd, failing to appear and contest the validity of the testator's will and proclamation being made according to law, it is Ordered to be recorded. Test. Wm. Waller, County Clerk. Sources for items not specifically sourced above: 1) Orange Co. In the present (2001), St. George Parish is in the city of Fredericksburg (no county). But, it is surrounded by Spotsylvania Co., VA.

Joseph Collins, Jr., son of Joseph and Catherine, married Susannah Lewis, dau. of Zachary. Joseph’s will, dated 27 August, 1757, Spotsylvania Co, Va., naming children: John, James, William, Thomas, Lewis, Ann Wisdom, Mary Brockman, Susanna Golson, Tabitha Gatewood, Drucilla Cook and Caty Glaze, as well as his wife Susanna, and granddaughter Amy Collins. Executors were sons John, James, William, Thomas and Lewis Collins.

At the time of Joseph's death, his son, James, was already in North Carolina. Thomas Collins and John Collins, Jr., gave bond as executors, 1st of Nov. 1757, with securities John Collins, Senior, and Edward Collins. This was filed in Court of Spotsylvania Co, Va., March 9th 1758. (Edward and John, Sr. would have had to be 21 yrs. old to serve as "securities")

The "Amy Collins", grand daughter mentioned in the will of Joseph Collins, probated Nov. l, 1757, Spots. Co, was the wife of Anthony Garnett. Sept. 5, 1749, William Golson (Gholson, etc.) and wife Susannah, (dau. of Joseph and Susannah) sold lands joining lands of Anthony Garnett and Joseph Hawkins. Oct. 31, 1752, Anthony Garnett and wife Amey sold to Edward Collins. Jan. 6, 1768 "where as the will of my late husband, Joseph Collins, dec'd., lend me all the land etc. I give consent to sale of land and personal effects, etc. and money to be divided among my children. Signed Susannah Collins
