Biography

Joseph Collins (aka Capt Joseph "Oliver" Collins I) ( son of John Collins and Elenore Oliver or [[Wyatt-702 | Mary Wyatt])[1]

Birth

Birth Estimate 1665-1667 Isle Of Wight, Virginia

There are wide variations in the birthdate for Joseph Collins, between 1660-1685. Abt. 1675-1685 (presumably Isle of Wright), based upon the marriage dates and approximate ages of Joseph's children. and IGI References[2] vs 1660--1685 New Kent County, King and Queen Virginia[1]

From analysis of genealogist BR Conolly:

According to Burke's Landed Gentry, 1939; also History of Caroline Co., Va., by H.R. Collins; Orange Co., Va. Families, by William Everette Brockman; and The Robertson (Robinson) Family, by John Frederick Dorman:...All agree that John Collins, son of William, had issue: John, Joseph, Thomas, George, William, and probably others. This is proven by the various land records.

In 1718, Joseph Collins was living on the border of Essex and King and Queen Counties, VA, as proven by Essex Deedbook 16, pages 51-54. A deed dated 25 Dec 1718 from Wm. Hall to Thomas Johnson, both of King and Queen, for 200 acres in Essex adjoining Joseph Collins. Another deed mentions Joseph Collins of Essex County, planter, on16 May 1737 sold to Nicholas Pampline a tract of 200 acres in Essex and King and Queen Counties. Shortly afterwards, Joseph moved to Spotsylvania County, where he was living by 17 January 1738 when he appears in the records of that county.

We recongize many of these names on the following land records as being descendants or close associates of Joseph Collins Virginia Colonial Abstracts, by Fleet,Vol. IV, King & Queen Co.,Va.: valuations of land, June 1,17??, pg. 7, Collins, Thomas 150 acrs; Thomas Cook, 140 acrs; John Collins, 365 acrs.; [[Collins-3009-|Joyeux Collins, 140 acrs.; John Collins 100 acrs.; John Jones, 505 acrs; James Jones, 160 acrs.; James Jones estate, 196 acrs .Alterations on land for 17??:

I removed Susannah Lewis-3484 as wife, which cleared up some of the issues with this profile. Need to look at the children next -- I've found sources for only four children, shown in the bio.

I too would like some help with this tree. There have been some merges within the Collins tree that I rejected, but were merged anyway. I don't know how to correct this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know. Several merges with unsourced children's profiles, and a profile that may be a combination of 3 different Joseph Collins have made a bit of a mess. I am looking for some reliable sources for this family - would appreciate any help in sorting them out.
