Biography

John Collins Sr. (abt.1645-1693)

Preface

Collins was a very common name in Virginia from early times, and certainly there were more than one Collins family present in many areas of the Virginia colony. Unfortunately many early Virginia records were destroyed during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars so it is difficult to locate birth, marriage and death records.

This profile is a collaborative work-in-progress. Due to a lack of verifiable sources much of the information on the Collins family conflict. Can you contribute information or sources? Recent research availability has helped to solidify some of the mis-information; Researchers are encouraged to reverify (and add source) information; making adjustments to profiles as necessary. Links are provided for reference and convenience only (and are considered unreliable /unproven unless sources are contained within).

Bio

John Collins, born about 1645 in Lawnes Creek Parish (now Bacons Castle) in Surry County, Virginia is believed to be the son of William Collins (1615-1705) and Ann King (1720-1699). [1]

John Collins married Eleanor Oliver, the daughter of John Oliver and Ellen in Isle of Wight County, Virginia before 5 Jan 1666 based on a sale of land that reads: "....from John Collins who married Eleanor, daughter of John Oliver, and John Wakefield "who married Mary, youngest daughter of John Oliver," with the consent of their wives, sold 300 acres of land on the Blackwater River at Isle of Wight County that had been granted to their father, John Oliver." [2] .

Eleanor was born about 2 July 1650 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia and died 9 Dec 1694 in Smithfield, Isle of Wight County, Virginia according her FindaGrave memorial. She is buried at St. Lukes Cemetery in Smithfield, Isle of Wight, County, Virginia along with her husband and son John Jr.

John and Eleanor are said to have had the following children:

Move to Profile for James Collins (1643–1730) (son of Unknown) m Lucy Burton (1645) daughter of Richard Burton (1611), mother, Lucy Johnson Estimated Location North Carolina (Perquimans County) and Nansemond, Virginia,

James Collins came to Virginia in early 1664 and received a land patent for 400 acres in Nancimond County, Virginia, 11 March 1664 (Nugent, p.195). James Collins had paid the way for John Bennet, Richard Harris, Nathaniel Gordon, Daniel Mackneal, and four others. Boddie's Historical Southern Families volume II p.103 related the arrival of Henry Gay and family from Kent and Devon, receiving 300 acres on 8 February 1663, on the west branch of the Nansemond River. On 22 April 1669, Henry Gay obtained a grant from Governor Sir William Berkely in the "Upper Parish of nansemond - adjacent to the lands of James Collins."
The Collins property in Virginia was very close to the North Carolina line, and descendants of James acquired additional land in North Carolina. James himself seems to have crossed into Perquimans County, North Carolina, where his will was probated on 19 May 1730, with his son William as executor of his estate along with James' second wife Lucee. His will also mentions a daughter named Alie Collins, however, in the will of his wife Lucee, she is mentioned as a daughter-in-law as well as William listed as son-in-law. Lucee died about the same time, as her will was also probated on 19 May 1730. A son, Thomas, was born by the second wife.

I have just finished fixing all of the reference errors, in which I discovered some previously 'invisible' sources which weren't showing in 'profile view' due to misplaced/incorrect reference tags. There were about 4 that are now visible. Some references had bad links and I either fixed them, replaced them, or if I determined that they were unfixable, I deleted them. I have made copious notes throughout and attached additional info to most of the surviving references, which I hope to be helpful when revisiting the sources. If you have any questions about any of the references, please feel free to ask.  :)

John seems to have married four times based on above wives. However, if you look at Elinor (Unknown) Oliver [Unknown-326845] born about 1650 and died after 1694 and compare to Eleanor Oliver [Oliver-731] born about 2 Jul 1650 and died about 10 Dec 1694, they appear to be the same individual. Then, if you look at Mary Frances Wyatt [Wyatt-5007] born about 1640 and died about 1723 and Mary Wyatt [Wyatt-702] born 1632 and died 1689. they also appear to be the same individual. Perhaps the two Oliver's should be merged and the two Wyatt's should be merged. This would have John with only two wives which I believe is correct.

I agree that both the two Oliver's and the two Wyatt's should be merged.

This person appears to be mis-attributed to the wrong parents. It probably happened through merges, at least one of which may have been incorrect. Mary King and Mary Oliver appear to be different people. IMHO it might be best to remove this John Collins parents and recreate them.

Collins-1817 and Collins-20560 do not represent the same person because: 15 years different in birth date, 50 in death. Needs investigating

From the info I have reviewed, this John Collins is the father of Eleanor Collins who married William DeLoach. She appears to be his only daughter; and because of this, I removed Sarah Collins Word as his daughter.

Unfortunately, we have been unable to determine Sarah Word's maiden name. Because of destruction of records in New Kent County VA, we probably will never know.

The John Collins who was father to Eleanor Collins who married William DeLoach died in 1692. He was married to a Mary Tooke, his second wife in 1682.

She died before 1692. John's only heir was Eleanor Deloach and he gave her 1350 acres of land. An inventory of the estate of John Collins, deceased, was taken at his house in Surry County, and was signed by J. Tooke and other persons on 8 January 1693. The inventory and record of sale were returned to a Surry County Court held on 3 July 1694. -- (Surry County Deed Book, 1694-1709, Part 1, pp. 12 and 13.)
