Biography

Col. James Harvey Nelson, MD, Colonel Collins's son-in-law, writes, in early 2017: Colonel Collins was a fine man. He remains as a composite of our group memories. Here is my tiny part. No doubt I made some factual errors, but I thought you might be interested in my individual slant while I can still write and remember a little. His three daughters could provide a much more accurate and detailed overview of his remarkable and long life. My views came into better focus when I got to know Holly Springs and some of his close relatives during our year at UNC at Chapel Hill in 1980-1981. They knew him also as a promising young man. I first met him when I was 22 and he was 65.

My report is of no consequence and Carolyn’s Family Tree Maker is not open to the world. I wish that Hubert were here to edit it and add more if he wished. Part of my interest is that the United States entered WWI a century ago in 1917 and changed the terrible standstill into victory with weapon superiority and numbers of fresh American soldiers including Hubert Walter Collins who had the temporary rank of Captain. Many American soldiers were killed. Your cousin Sgt. Walter Victor "Victor" Collins gave his life in combat in WWII. If he had lived, you probably would have a number of Collins relatives in the South.

I sent you a picture of Hubert today. He was a handsome, sturdy, and determined officer at age 35. Hubert and Eleanor made a good match.

Career: Had a degree in math from UNC, Chapel Hill, and a master's in math, i think, from Chapel Hill, as well; i think he taught for a time at Chapel Hill . . . . Then he went to MIT and Harvard simultaneously (they were running a joint program, which did not last long; he got two degrees, one from each institution) to get a BSc in civil engineering. At the beginning of WWI he took an exam which lasted 40 hrs.; this got him into the Corps of Engineers with a commission (meaning he became an officer). Over the years being an officer got him a stint in Cooks and Bakers' School in WDC, when he had a young family (my two older sisters). He was a river engineer in Kansas City when he met my mother and finally got married, at age 40 (she was 30)(he claimed he could not afford to get married earlier - he had a mother in NC to support and a sister was involved, as were some houses - some bad blood came out of those many years). He was on the civil engineering faculty at Colorado A&M, later Colorado State, in Fort Collins, after he retired from the Army in about 1947. We had lived in Burlingame (he closed the Army depot at Lathrop and didn't want us to live there; he closed the one in Oakland and didn't want us to live there either); before that we joined him in Pasco, Wash., while he closed the depot there. After WWII, when he was in N Africa and Italy (he commanded the 'last Negro regiment'), there were many depots to close. He acquired me, the third daughter, just as WWII began. I remember his sitting close to our one radio listening intently to Truman when someone yelled Give 'em Hell, Harry." He was very concerned about the beginning of the Korean War and my mother explained that he feared he would be called out of retirement.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hubert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hubert:
