Biography

Emma Collins was born in 1853 at Oxford in Oxfordshire. [1]

Henry Thomas Lay and Emma Collins were married at Holy Trinity Church in Oxford on 24 May 1874. [2] [3]

In 1881 Emma Lay was living at 9 Cardigan Street in the Jericho area of Oxford with her husband Henry and their sons. Her age was given as 27, implying a birth date in 1853 or 1854. Her birthplace was given as Oxford. She was a dressmaker. [1]

The family emigrated to Canada in 1883.

She passed away in 1926. [4]

Research Notes

Her birth registration may be that of Emma Collins in Oxford registration district in Oct-Dec quarter of 1854. (Note: this is not consistent with the birth date of 24 August 1853 on the profile.) [5]

Her parents would then be the Absalom Collins and Sarah Francombe who were married at St Ebbes in Oxford in 1851.

The only Absalom Collins in Oxford in 1861 seems to be in the workhouse.

His wife may be the Sarah A. Collins who was living (in 1861) at Speedwell Place in St Ebbes with her daughters Susannah Francombe and Mary A. Collins, and grandson Charles Francombe. Emma is not there. [6]

This is imperfect. It would be helpful to look up the details of Emma's marriage to Henry Lay, since that should confirm her father's name, which would be a start.
