Research Notes

Several of William's children brought suit against William Tippets of Warwick in 1720.[9] Martin Howard of Newport, clothier, and Ann his wife, Sarah Collins of Newport, spinster, and Elizabeth Collins an infant [minor] by Daniel Whitman her guardian of Newport, house carpenter, are named three of their heirs of William Collins of Newport, deceased, and coheirs to William Collins their brother late of Newport, mariner, deceased. This concerned land laid out to John Smith [former President of Rhode Island Colony and step-father to William's father Ellyza/Elizur].

The defendant claimed right to come on the land to cut timber by deed of gift from Eliza Collins to his two sons Eliza and William. Eliza Jr. died in 1688, under 21 years old, and his right descended to William, father of the plaintiffs, but Thomas Collins, elder brother of Eliza and William was still living and his right was not mentioned in the suit.

Collins-6806 and Collins-2506 appear to represent the same person because: The 1720 lawsuit on Collins-6806 shows that William father of Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth and William was the son of Ellyza Collins and grandson of Ann (____) (Collins) Smith, who had married John Smith, early Rhode Island settler and President of the Colony.
