Biography

Samuel Collins was born about 1776, probably at Schenectady, Albany, New York. On the United States 1800 Census for Schenectady Ward 4, Albany, New York, Samuel is shown as age 16-26. Find A Grave gives his birth year as 1783, but the 1800 census shows he has a wife the same age and four children, three females age 10 or under and one male age 10-16. Quite a feat for a 17-year old! We can safely believe Samuel was at least 25-26 years old in 1800.[1][2]

Samuel was the son of Julius Collins and Deborah Culver. The name of Julius Collins is right above Samuel's on the 1800 Census. Julius' household consists of one male and one female age 45 or over, one male age 10-16, one female up to age 10, and one female age 16-26. This Julius Collins was probably Samuel's father. Further evidence of close relationship is the name of Simon GROOT on the same page of the census. Julius' daughter (Samuel's sister) Melicent Collins married Isaac Simonse Groot, son of Simon Cornelis Groot.[3]

Samuel Collins is on the United States 1810 Census for New York, Lewis, New York,[4] as is Julius Collins.[5]

Samuel Collins passed away in 1860 at Rollin, Lenawee, Michigan. He is buried at Sherman Farm Cemetery Lenawee, Michigan where he had been living with his family.[6]

The little boy (1861-12 Mar 1865), buried 1865, was the son of William Gibbs (b. 1837) and Mabel E. ("Bell") Soule (b. 1842). He is buried in this cemetery with his grandfather (and namesake), Benjamin Soule (1790-1863) and his great-grandfather, Samuel Collins (1776-1860). Much of the Soule and Gibbs families moved north to Montcalm and Mecosta counties (MI), shortly after these deaths. During the time of these three burials, the parents and grandparents were residing on the Ephaim Sloan farm, one-half mile north of the Sherman Farm Cemetery.[7]
