Alexander Colquhoun XVII (son of Alexander Alasdair COLQUHOUN [LORD] and Margaret Unknown) was born 1599 in Luss, Dunbarton, Scotland, and died 18 Jul 1632 in Dumbarton, Scotland. [needs proper citation]
"Alexander married Marion Stirling before 18th June 1632 on which date they had a daughter baptised Jean.........Alexander Colquhoun appears to have died without living issue" . Alexander and Marion were married just twelve days short of one year, having married 30 July 1631. [1]
He married:
-- Helen Buchanan. [2]
-- Marion Sterling [Stirling] on 30 July 1631 in Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[3]
-- Marion Sterling in 1631. Children of Alexander Colquhoun XVII and Marion Sterling are: i.Jean Colquhoun b 1632 d 1632 [predeceased her father by six days]
ii.William Colquhoun, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, d. 22 Jun 1675, East Rehoboth, MA, USA ~ there is NO proof at all of William being Alexander's son and would have been impossible for him to be born to Marion Stirling. [I feel it is not down to me to remove him, however, without finding his true parentage]
-- Marion Sterling in 1631. Children of Alexander Colquhoun XVII and Marion Sterling [Stirling] are: i.Sir John Colquhoun, Baronet <--- Was not a child of Marion and Alexander ii.William Colquhoun, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, d. 22 Jun 1675, East Rehoboth, MA, USA <--- Not likely, either
Children of Alexander Colquhoun XVII and Marion Stirling i.John Cahoon, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Ssotland. ii.John Cowan, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Scotland, d. 1650. iii.John Cowan Colquhoun, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Scotland, d. 1650. iv.John Cahoon, b. 1632. v.Jean Cahoon, b. 1635. vi.William Cohoon, b. 1611, Dunbartonshir, Scotland, d. 1687. vii.William Cohoon, b. 1634, Taunton, Bristol, MA, USA, d. 22 Jun 1675, E Rehoboth, Brisrol, MA, USA. viii.William Cahoon, b. 1633, d. 1675. ix.John Cowan Cahoone, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Scotland, d. 1650. x.Jean Colquhoun, b. 1632.
Something to investigate.
I am leaving the above in deference to the Project Manager. Where it came from, I do not know. I do know it did not come from page xxv Chiefs of Colquhoun and Their Country.
Clan Septs
The Clan Colquhoun International Society, the official organization representing the clan considers the following names as septs of clan Colquhoun.
Calhoun, Cahoon, Cahoone, Cohoon, Colhoun, Cowan, Cowen, Cowing, Ingram (or Ingraham), Kilpatrick, King, Kirkpatrick, Laing (or Lang) , McCowan, McMains (or McMain), McManus, McClintock and McOwan, Covian , McCovian.[4]
I am adding this for if you have noticed the name John Cowan Colquhoun above as one of Alexander's children.
Where did William Cahoun come from?
I have seen the rumour around and all I am doing here is sharing it for what it is worth. It begs serious investigation. I am sure most of you have seen the rumour. What I am hoping for is that one of you may have some provable insight into who William Cahoun really is. Is he the son of Sir John Colquhoun and Lady Catherine Graham? [5]
That has been one take on his parentage, but! What if he was born to an Alexander Colquhoun of a different line of the family? They were not all nobility. Like any family, you have your "haves" and your "have nots". It is, however, very likely that this is exactly the case. Somewhere I have read [no, I have no citation] that William once said his father's name was Alexander. But as we are in no doubt of now, he was not Sir Alexander.
I welcome all proveable help here. Many thanks.

Marion Sterling on 30 July 1631 in Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[2] Children of Alexander Colquhoun XVII and Marion Stirling i.John Cahoon, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Ssotland. ii.John Cowan, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Scotland, d. 1650. iii.John Cowan Colquhoun, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Scotland, d. 1650. iv.John Cahoon, b. 1632. v.Jean Cahoon, b. 1635. vi.William Cohoon, b. 1611, Dunbartonshir, Scotland, d. 1687. vii.William Cohoon, b. 1634, Taunton, Bristol, MA, USA, d. 22 Jun 1675, E Rehoboth, Brisrol, MA, USA. viii.William Cahoon, b. 1633, d. 1675. ix.John Cowan Cahoone, b. 1632, Tullichewan, Scotland, d. 1650. x.Jean Colquhoun, b. 1632.
It is making my head swim, if I am honest. *If* Marion Stirling had Jean and John as twins in 1632, that would make sense but...it is near impossible for her to have gotten pregnant with William before Alexander died on 24 June 1632 because I have a birthdate for Jean of bef 18 Jun 1632. She and John had to have been twins. Now...think about this... Marion and Alexander would have had to get pregnant with William in that six day time slot between the 18th and 24th as everything points to him being born in 1633. This is impossible. Yes, some women become pregnant at their own folly mere weeks after a child is born but never mere days. Unless these birthdates are wrong, I hate to admit that William is not Alexander's son. I had high hopes this would all work out because down to my 3rd great-grandmother I once had twenty-two generations of Colquhoun bloodline but sadly, I see this coming to an end here. This must be set right though.
I did the next best thing that I could do. I cleaned up the profile with a gentle hand so as not to irritate the PE whom I am sure is simply too busy as many are and have left the two extra children until we can sort William. He is clearly a son of a less noble Alexander, I believe.
