Archdale died about April, 1735 in King George, Virginia Colony, aged about 35.
Research Notes
Archdale first appears in records when he is named in the will of his father, John Combs, dated 11 December 1716. He is not left a specific legacy except a share of John's personal estate. He is enjoined not to "dispossess" his mother of her home.[1] This implies that the property was entailed and that Archdale was the oldest son and automatically inherited the land.
Archdale Combs, of Essex County (formed from Old Rappahannock in 1692), in a deed dated 22 June 1719 sold the plantation previously owned by his father ("a certain parcell of land whereon my father, John Coombs did last dwell scituate ye County of Richmond...") to Thomas Dickeson of Richmond County. No release of dower rights has been found for this sale. This implies that a) Archdale was not married; and b) he either had the permission of his mother, Hannah, or she was remarried or deceased.[2]
Witnessed to the signature of Catherine Triplett on 7 June 1728; indicates he had moved from Essex to King George County.
Sold 6 acres of land to Mary Tutt, both of Hanover Parish, King George County, on 20 April 1730.
Wrote his will dated 19 February 1734/5 in Hanover Parish, King George County.
Marriage
Archdale was probably married twice. His first wife is unknown. His second wife was Mary Unknown. He probably had daughters Mary and Ann with first wife. Isabelle is daughter of second wife, Mary. He possibly had a son, but this is unconfirmed.
