William was born in 1851[1] He was the son of William Compton and Eliza Harriet Elliot
He was christened on 7th June 1851 at Castle Ashby, Northamptonshire, England[2]
He was living with his parents and siblings at Rutland Gate, St Margaret, Westminster, Middlesex, England and he was attending school in 1861[3]
He was living with his mother and siblings in Studham, Studham, Bedfordshire, England and he was still attending school in 1871[4]
He served in the Diplomatic Service as Second Secretary to the British embassies in Paris, Rome and St Petersburg. He then served as Private Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the Earl Cowper, between 1880 and 1882
He married Mary Baring in 1884 in St George Hanover Square, Middlesex, England[5] He received the courtesy title of Earl Compton in 1887 on the death of his elder brother.
He was elected a founder member of London County Council for Finsbury in 1889, then served as County Alderman from 1892 to 1895. He was J.P. for the counties of Warwickshire and Northamptonshire.
He was President of the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1902. From 1908 he was Honorary Colonel of the London Heavy Brigade of the Royal Garrison Artillery.
He was later Special Envoy to Foreign Courts to announce the accession of King George V in 1910 and served as Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire from 1912 to 1913. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1908 and was also a Knight of Grace of the Order of St John of Jerusalem
He passed away in 1913 and he now buried at Castle Ashby, Northamptonshire, England
