In 1783, William moved up to Canada, to Parrtown, New Brunswick, with his father, William Henry Compton, a Loyalist from the Loyalist enclave in Monmouth County, NJ. There he and his father worked in the shipbuilding industry with the Daniel Vaughan family, loyalists from Scituate, Rhode Island. He married Daniel Vaughan's daughter, Mary. He belonged to the St. John Militia. Following service in the War of 1812, he was granted a tract of wilderness land lying to the westward of Quaco (now St. Martins), New Brunswick, in 1815. He was a shipbuilder specializing in the making of vessel's bilge pumps, taff-rail posts, lignum vitae shelves, and blocks. - paraphrase of information taken from The Loyalist Comptons of Prince Edward Island, page 6.
He moved to PEI later in life with his wife, Mary Vaughan and his young family (His oldest son, William, stayed behind in New Brunswick)-- family tradition says they were following the Rev. Donald MacDonald, a charismatic evangelist from Scotland, when they moved to Prince Edward Island.
