Source DAR DAR Ancestor # A024745[2]: Rank: Soldier (Virginia). Private in Lt. Col. Elias Edmonds's Virginia Artillery Regiment (First Virginia State Regiment of Artillery) during the Revolutionary War. Culpeper County, VA Militia (VADAR Jan 1781 list of classes) – [age 43].

Zachariah COMPTON held the rank of Private in Lieutenant-Colonel Elias Edmonds's Virginia Artillery Regiment (First Virginia State Regiment of Artillery) during the Revolutionary War. But it seems that, as late as 1782, Zachariah COMPTON continued to reside in Charles County, Maryland. He later moved to Culpeper County, Virginia and is said to have died in Bluefield, Mercer County, [West] Virginia while visiting one of his sons.

Charles County Land Record Book G#3, 1756-1761; Page 529. Lease. Jan 27, 1761 from Stephen Compton of CC, planter, and Mary, his wife, formerly Mary Warren, to Zachariah Compton of CC, planter, for 10 shillings, a tract of land in CC commonly called Warrens Discovery, containing about 280 acres, which same tract of land was devised to sd Mary by her father, John Warren. This is a lease for the natural life of sd Stephen Compton, and for no other use, paying yearly 1 shilling sterling if required. Signed - Stephen Compton, Mary Compton. Wit - John Winters, Robt Horner. Recorded Apr 15, 1761.

Mar 12, 1762 from Zachariah Compton of CC, planter, to Stephen Compton of CC, planter, for 10 shillings, all that tract of land in CC called Warrens Discovery, containing about 280 acres, during the natural life of sd Stephen, paying yearly, if required, 1 shilling sterling. He was not listed as an heir in his father's will of 1770. He moved to Culpeper Co, Virginia 1775, Culpeper Co, Virginia: listed as a buyer at the sale of one Henry Threlkeld.

Deed Book L3 P90 12 March 1762 - Zachariah Compton of Charles County, Maryland, planter, to Stephen Compton of same place, planter, sum of . . . . . shillings (sum obliterated) a parcel of land commonly called Warren's Discovery, containing by estimation 280 acres more or less to hold for the life of Stephen Compton.

The photo that you have for the Zachariah Compton can not be the actual Zachariah Compton that died before 1800. Still photography was not invented and in use in the United States until the 1830's. It was invented in the 1820's in France. So, your photo is of someone else, who lived after 1800. You may want to research the photo and the original source. Great pic, though.
