Matthew COMPTON IV, his wife Nancy VAUGHN, and their son Howard Wilson COMPTON were residents of Wilson County, Tennessee in the 1830s and, while there, were members of the Brush Creek Primitive Baptist Church - just inside Smith County.. From the evidence of the church's records, Matthew COMPTON and Nancy VAUGHN appear to have departed Wilson County for Warren County, Tennessee in the late summer or autumn of 1838. On 16 October, 1850, the United States Census for the 16th Civil District, Warren County, Tennessee was taken. On page 55, it shows the household of Matthew COMPTON IV: Mathew COMPTON, male, aged 72, born in Maryland Nancy COMPTON, female, aged 72, born in Virginia Carolane HEATH, female, aged 20, born in Tennessee Note 3: For Matthew COMPTON IV, an alternative lineage has been claimed, giving him the name and dates of William Matthew COMPTON IV (17 November 1779, Maryland - BEF 1855, Warren County, Tennessee: Baptist Church Cemetery, Rock Island, Warren County, Tennessee). Under this name, he is said to have been the son of William Matthew COMPTON III (31 December 1746, Trinity Parish, Charles County, Maryland, British North America - 1 November 1809, Culpeper County, Virginia) and Theodosia Scott EARLE [See Note 11 under G0495A: Matthew COMPTON II.]. His siblings are said to have been: Richard COMPTON [M]; Garrett COMPTON (ABT 1777, Culpeper County, Virginia -?) [M]: m. Charlotte YATES; Edward COMPTON [M]: m. Rebecca MURPHY, 1799; Charles COMPTON [M]; and Truman COMPTON [M]. William Matthew COMPTON III, by this account, is then said to have been the son of William Matthew COMPTON II (26 June 1709, Charles County, Maryland, British North America - 14 March 1770, St. Mary's County, Maryland, British North America) and Rachel HOWARD who were married 31 December 1735 in Trinity Parish, Charles County, Maryland. Except for the fact that William COMPTON appears to have been conflated with Matthew COMPTON III, the offspring attributed to William Matthew COMPTON II and Rachel HOWARD are the same as those attributed here at G0495A: Matthew COMPTON II. The names of the children of Matthew COMPTON II and Rachel HOWARD are documented in the Last Will and Testament of Matthew COMPTON II and in the Last Will and Testament of Stephen COMPTON. At the last, William Matthew COMPTON II is said to have been the son of William Matthew COMPTON I (ABT 1680, Charles County, Maryland, British North America - ABT 1747, Charles County, Maryland, British North America) and Susannah BRISCOE (1687, Charles County, Maryland, British North America - ABT 1739). Argument against this construction of the lineage of the person here called "Matthew COMPTON IV" - in distinction from "William Matthew COMPTON IV" - begins by noting that there is no evidence that Matthew COMPTON I, whose Will is on record [see above, Note 1, under G0496A: Matthew COMPTON I.], was ever called "William Matthew COMPTON." Furthermore, in June 1813, Matthew and Theodosia COMPTON were listed in Breckenridge County, Kentucky as having migrated from Botetourt County, Virginia. [See Note 11 under G0495A: Matthew COMPTON II.] And, on 6 April 1818, in Breckenridge County, Kentucky, Matthew COMPTON executed a series of deeds granting one slave to his daughter, Cynthia E. COMPTON, and granting land to his son-in-law, Samuel CRAWFORD, Jr., and to his daughter, Theodosia COMPTON, but reserving lifetime tenancy on the land for himself and for his wife. On this date, he also executed a deed granting land to his daughter, Rhoda COMPTON, the wife of Nathan MILES, but - as before - reserving lifetime tenancy on the land for himself and for his wife. The known children of Matthew COMPTON and Theodosia Scott EARLE were, therefore: John COMPTON [M]: m. Elizabeth BOARD, 22 November 1814, Breckenridge County, Kentucky; Rhoda COMPTON [F]: m. Nathan MILES, 30 September 1816, Breckenridge County, Kentucky; Cynthia E. COMPTON [F]; and Theodosia Earle COMPTON [F]: m. Samuel CRAWFORD, Jr. This is in marked disagreement with the children listed for Matthew COMPTON (under the name of "William Matthew COMPTON III) and Theodosia Scott EARLE in the alternative lineage proposed for Matthew COMPTON IV (under the name of "William Matthew COMPTON IV"). Incidentally, Elizabeth BOARD, the wife of John COMPTON, was the daughter of Absalom BOARD (ABT 1750, Bedford County, Virginia, British North America - died in Breckenridge County, Kentucky) and Martha WHITWORTH who were married about 1773. The alternative genealogy proposed for Matthew COMPTON IV is, in toto, somewhat unconvincing.
