Susannah's father wrote his Will on March 19, 1744/45 and it was probed on September 5, 1747. Susannah was named in her father's Will:

  • " I give and bequeath to my daughter Susanna Whitely 2 shilling sterling in bar that she shall not claim any other part of my Estate."

Children of Susannah and Robert include:

  • Margaret Whitely, born circa 1734, in Loudoun County, Virginia, died in October, 1825, in Henry County, Kentucky, married William Smith on April 17, 1765

Research Notes

About Susannah Compton, from Becky Bass Bonner and Josephine Lindsay Bass, My Southern Family: A Genealogical Study of Historical Southern Families:

In Fairfax County, a Robert Whitely died intestate prior to 1744. That year, the court records (Will Book A, p.50) show his widow, Susanna(h) Whitely, to be the administrator of his estate. Later (Will Book A, p.75), there was an appraisal of his estate 'at the plantation of Robert Whitely.' The appraisal included a boat and one old warming pan. The next year, the records show (Will Book A, pp. 125 and 134) the administrator to be Susanna Taylor. She had married Henry Taylor, a widower with several children, between 1744 and 1745. (By 1751, they had a son John).
"In Fairfax County, Virginia, in 1755, a lease from Robert Carter to Henry Taylor listed William Whitley as the son of Susannah Taylor by her former husband (Robert Whitely). Susannah Compton Whitely Taylor survived her husband Henry by many years and died about 1787. Loudoun County court records show a settlement of her estate. (Deed Book R, p. 94 - 29 December 1787).
"Implied Marriages of Fairfax County, Virginia, p. 217: 'Taylor, Henry & Susannah Whitely, administratrix of Robert Whitely (Deed Book D1, part 1, pp. 225 - 227; Will Book Al, part 1, p. 126).
"Court records in Charles County, Maryland, just across the Potomac River from Fairfax County, Virginia, help identify Susanna Whitely's background.
"She was the daughter of Matthew and Susanna (Briscoe) Compton and the granddaughter of Philip and Susannah (Swan) Briscoe. In 1740, Matthew Compton named his daughter, Susannah Whitely, in his will.
"The same year, Susannah Briscoe, widow of Philip, willed her 'granddaughter Susannah Whitley a warming pan and to the remaining children of my daughter Susannah Compton one shilling each.' Matthew Compton's will is in Will Book AC4, page 235, and Susannah Briscoe's will in the same book on page 116. Other wills in these families tie the relationship together."

Another site lists the death of Henry Taylor's first wife, Margaret Cork, as 1745. If that is the case some of the children listed as belonging to Susannah may in fact be Margaret Cork's. (Elizabeth, for one)
