Eber Crawford Compton was born about 1833 in Essex County, New Jersey. He was a son of Hannah (Elyea) Compton (1798-1885) and David Compton (1797-1876).
He married Sarah Elizabeth Fish (1836 - 1900). The 1860 census recorded the following description pertaining to this family:
Eber Compton served in the American Civil War in Co. E., 1st Regiment, Michigan Engineers and Mechanics. Enlisted 16 Dec 1863 at Grand Rapids for 3 years, age 31. Mustered 5 Jan 1864. Artificer. Mustered out at Nashville, TN 22 Sept 1865.
