After reading the attached article "The Conways of Greene" and checking my GEDMatch with the kits shown above I wonder if my 4th Great Grandfather, Thomas Conoway, who m. Sarah Waters is part of the family referenced. I have not been able to connect my Conoway's to the Virginia family but believe Sarah Waters may have been from South Carolina.

Re GEDMatch: There are just a few large few large matches but the matches are plentiful. Re Proximity: Thomas Conoway was on the 1777, 1784 and 1790 Tax List and Census Records for Caswell County, NC. By 1800 they had moved west with his son-in-law and brothers-in-law where he died in Allen, KY in 1833. His daughter Sarah m. Henry Durham in Caswell County and they were my 3rd Great Grandparents.

"No sources have yet been noted which show the use of that surname (Conaway) unless it is in some Ancestry Tree." That statement appears to be untrue. If you look at Virginia Vital Records for the father John Conaway you will see the surname is spelled Conaway (p 400 of the cited Vital Records edited by McGhan). So, the surname was spelled Conaway in the generation before this profile. This profile does not cite any primary source documentation for a spelling of the surname. Absent a primary source, the spelling of the surname in this generation by this member of the family would be unknown.

Conaway-496 and Conway-1287 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse and death date. Sources needed for Conaway surname, but it can be added as 'Other Last Name'.

Some uncertainty in a profile is OK and preferred over having two profiles. Put your concerns in some Research Notes after doing the merge.

Looks like this profile needs to be merged with Conaway-496 (Same name, same spouse). Both profiles need sources.

Conway-1287 and Conaway-496 do not represent the same person because: I don't have any objection to a merger, but want more info as to what order. Conway-1287 was the earlier profile. Merging this into the latter Conaway-496 would change the spelling of the last name. I don't have enough info to decide on the preferred spelling.
