John Conney, son of John Coney and Elizabeth, was born 5 Jan 1655, in Boston, Massachusetts.[1]
John was an early American silversmith and goldsmith from Boston, Massachusetts, specializing in engraving. He served an apprenticeship with Jeremiah Dummer, who was the first American born silversmith. He became most important Bostonian silversmith of his day and in 1702, he engraved Massachusetts' paper money. He designed a version of the Harvard College seal.[2]
John married in 1694, Jeremiah's sister Mary Atwater. They had both previously been married. He had twelve children in total, but only five daughters survived into adulthood.[2]
John's last apprentice, (1716-1722) was Apollos Rivoire, father of Paul Revere. Other apprentices included the brothers Samuel (1684-1713) and John (1692-1720) Gray, early silversmiths from Connecticut, and John Burt.[2]
John Coney died in Boston, 20 August 1722.[3]
The first wife of John was Sarah Blakeman who was called Sarah Cunny in her father's 1689 will.[4]
