Lieutenant Joseph Conklin was born in 1690/1691, in Long Island, New York (See notes) a son of Joseph Conklin, and his wife, Abigail Tuthill. Lieutenant Conkling's father died November 23, 1698. Letters of administration on his estate were issued December 16, 1698, to his widow, Abigail and her father, John Tuthill, Sr. They were the parents of Joseph Conkling, born August 7, 1691 and John Conklying, born October 16, 1694. [1]
About 1715, Joseph married Alice Tinker, born 1693, in Hamburg, New London county, Connecticut, a daughter of Samuel Tinker and Abigail Durant. Children of Joseph and Alice are:
Alice (Tinker) Conklin died April 11, 1730, at a young age (36-37) and was buried in the Hashamomack Cemetery, in Southold. Joseph married, secondly, Elsie Mapes, born circa 1697, in Mattituck, Suffolk county Long Island. Joseph and Elise became the parents of a son:
After the death of Elsie (Mapes) Conklin, Joseph married a third time to Lydia Kirtland, born October 11, 1685, in Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut. Lydia was the widow of Robert Griffing, born 1685, in Southold, who had died March 28, 1729, at the age of 43 years. Lydia brought three children from her first marriage to this union.
Lieutenant Conkling died January 20, 1739, and was buried in Hashamomack Cemetery, with his first wife. Lydia (Kirtland) Griffing-Conkling died January 27, 1742, and was buried in the Old Burying Ground of First Presbyterian Church, with her first husband.

Old Style Calendar: Before 1752 the year began on Lady Day, March 25th,. Dates between January 1st and March 24th were at the end of the year. Old Style (O.S.) and New Style (N.S.) are used to indicate whether the year has been adjusted. Often both dates are used.

There is a possible confusion as to the lineage of this Joseph Conklin with his three wives. Two Josephs were born about the same time in the same place and are listed in the 1698 census of Southold, one being the son of Joseph (son of John) and Abigail, the other being the son of Joseph (son of Jacob). It is possible that Lieutenant Joseph's grandfather was Jacob Coklin rather than John Conkling
