Biography

Alice was born in September 1868.

Richard Allen and Alice Connell were married in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, on February 5, 1894.[1]

Alice died on July 29, 1949, in New Orleans.[2]

"At the residence, 2301 St. Charles Av., on Friday July 29, 1949, at 3 o'clock p. m. Alice Agnes Connell, wife of the late Richard A. Allen, mother of John E. Allen, Mrs. George J. Daviau of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Howard J. O'Brian of this city; grandmother of Jack Allen. Aged 80 years, a native of this city.

"Funeral will take place from the home of Joseph Laughlin Company, 4500 Magazine street, Sunday, July 29, 1949, at 1:45 p.m. services at St. Alphonsus church, Constantine and Josephine streets. Interment in St. Joseph No. 2 Cemetery."[3]

In 1940, Alice Allen, a 71 year old widow, lived in a house she rented at 2301 St. Charles Ave. with son John, 44, a general clerk for a railroad; daughter Katherine O'Brien, 29, a typist; son-in-law Howard O'Brien, 27, a substituted clerk at the US post office; granddaughter Alice O'Brien, 3/12; grandson Jack Alam?, 12; and lodger, Ethel Gillman, a 28 year old secretary. All were born in Louisiana. All lived in the same place in 1935 except John and Katherine, who then lived in Los Angeles, California.[4]

In 1930, Alice Allen, a 61 [68] year old widow, lived in a place she rented at 2014 Prytania with daughter Alice A. Allen, 30, a lawyer in general practice; and Katherine R Allen, 21, a stenographer in a bank. All were born in Louisiana, as there were parents.[5]

1920 US Federal Census Ward 10, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana

In 1920, Alice A. Allen, a 51 year old widow, lived in a home she rented at 1915 Chestnut St. with son John E. , 24, an assorter for a presser; daughter Alice A, 20, a stenographer in an office; and Katherine, 11. All were born in Louisiana, and Alice's parents were born in Ireland.[6]

1910 US Federal Census Ward 1, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana

In 1910, Richard Allen, a 41 year old screwman on a levee, lived in a home he rented with his wife Alice Allen, 41, and four children: John, 15, a check boy for a telegraph company; Alice, 10; Richard, 5; and Katherine, 1. All were born in Louisiana. Richard and his wife have been married for 16 years, and Alice has had 7 children, 4 of whom are living. Richard and Alice's parents are shown as "Ire-English."[7]

In 1900, Richard Allen, 31 b. February 1869, a longshoreman, lived in a place he rented at 625 Josephine with his wife Alice, 31, b. September 1868, and two children: John, 5 b. January 1895; and Alice, 9/12 b. September 1899. Sister Cathrine Allen, 36 b. March 1864, was living with the family. All were born in Louisiana. Richard and Alice have been married for 6 years, and Alice has had 4 children, 2 of whom are living.[8]
