Biography

There are two very distinct families mixed up here - John C. O'Conner is NOT the same as John Connor of Culpeper & Orange John O'Conner was from Ireland. He did not live in Culpeper or Orange. - the other John Connor (wife Elizabeth Kavanaugh)

The Conner-O'Conner-Simmons Kin - is a terrible source for it mixes these two distinct families. John C. O'Conner continued with the O'Conner but the John Connor (husband of Kavenaugh) family never used the O'.

John C. O'Connor's wife was Sarah, I think, but not Kavenaugh.

Served in the Revolutionary War

John was born in 1715. John O'Conner ... He passed away in 1787.

Known living in Virginia 1721 at age 6. See: Spotsylvania County Records, 1721-1800.

John O'Conner Conner, Sr. (b. Abt. 1714, d. Abt. 1788) John O'Conner Conner, Sr. (son of ?) was born Abt. 1714 in County Antrim, Ireland,   Notes for John O'Conner Conner, Sr.: John's physical description: "He was a raw-boned Irishman, outmeasureing anybody, almost, from his chin to the top of his head, and a man of very fine sense." He was also described as a very amiable person.

The book is called Conner-O'Conner-Simmons Kin [or O'Connor-Conner-Sims Kin]. . There is a web site devoted to the Kavanaugh family, and it contains information about John Conner, the immigrant from Ireland. Hope this information helps you. Liz.

Tennessee Conner Descendants

John Connor (husband of Elizabeth Kavenaugh) ancestors had lived for 3 generations in Virginia - maybe more!!

O'Conners-Conner-Simmons Family, by a Julia Simmons, I believe. This small volume chronicles the descendants of John Conner of Spotsylvania, VA., Irish emigrant, Most state archives have it; the Chattanooga Public Library had a copy when I saw it.

I have some upline information. My father-in-law Roy Conner had a man named Hugh Allen do some research back in 1960; unfortunately my father-in-law passed away in 1964 and never finished. According to Mr Allen: John Conner and his brother, William, came from Ireland to Virginia, dropping the O' from their names. John was born about 1715 and died about 1787. In 1734

She and John were married about 1711[sic]. John & Elizabeth, along with their 10 children, moved to Knox County, Tennessee. (According to Mr. Allen "this is your man") Thier ninth child was William, who is estimated to have been born about 1750 or 1755 "or so." William married Jemima (unk) and had a son named William born Jan 29, 1780, married Sally Cox, born March 26, 1785. They were married on Jan 9, 1806. Sally was the daughter of Curd Cox.

"The two William Conners are listed in the 1806 tax list of Knox County." "One William owned 91 acres of land. The other one, probably the father, owned 120 acres of land and one slave. This William Conner, the son, was of course the father of Richard Newport Conner---and you can take it from there."

As I said, unfortunately we can't find where my father-in-law did anything. All I know is that his father was John who was born between 1868 and 1874 (we estimate because he died in the early 1950s in his mid-80's) he married a Mattie Mays March 23, 1894 in Knoxville. Do you have anything that could connect John with Richard Newport? Greetings, Leona.

I have some information about your John Conner. Hugh Allen was a descendant in my branch of Conners, the gr-grandson of Winnifred Conner Cureton and he spent more than 50 years tracing the people of East Tennessee. If there was a man I could meet across time, Hugh Allen would rank high.

I have some of his original documents, and many others are in the Roark-Conner Collection of the Tennessee Archives. Hugh always believed that the two main Tennessee branches of Conners, the Knox County group and the Jefferson/Cocke/Hamilton branch, were related. I have not found the link, and I've looked for 15 years.

Your John G. Conner was married to Mattie Mayes by W.B. Bayless, Minister of the Gospel, on March 23, 1894. The bond was provided by S.F. Conner. This reference is page 221, "Knox County, Tennessee, Marriages," which lists about 100-150 Conner marriages.

The William Conner who came to Knoxville had a sister Sarah Conner. She reportedly married a man named Newport, and, at one time, they may have lived at Newport, TN. That Sarah Newport might be where the Newport name comes from in your family. Please let me know what else you have on this line. I am looking for the links, too. Liz

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

O'Conner-104 and Conner-5115 appear to represent the same person because: same birth and death

I have a DNA match to the families of both John (1715 -1787) and William Conners. This lends weight to them being brothers. Also my Conner / O'Connor family is definitely from county Kerry and Limerick. I'm not sure where the Antrim link comes from but I think it is very unlikely. I am almost certain that the family is from the O'Connor Kerry Sept. Can anyone tell me if there is any evidence that John and William were born in the US or in Ireland? Thank you.

O'Conner-104 and Conner-1093 appear to represent the same person because: These two appear to be the same person, and I believe both have a son named John Conner that is the same person as well. Managers will want to decide if this guy's last name is O'Conner or Conner.
