Frederick was born in 1807 in South Carolina. He is understood to be the son of James Conner and Polly Barker. Frederick married Hannah McKinney. [1] In 1850, Frederick, his wife, children and two inferred sisters are enumerated on the federal census in Abbeville County, South Carolina. [2] In 1860, Frederick, widowed, is enumerated on the federal census in Houston, Texas. [3] Frederick died 1863 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. [4]
The Find A Grave entry gives Frederick's name as "John Frederick" even though the gravestone indicates only "Frederick." Indeed, no available contemporaneous record refers to Frederick as "John Frederick." The name would seem further precluded by the fact that Frederick had a brother John.
According to The History of Houston Co., page 303, Margaret Conner, Peggy Conner, William Reese Conner and John Frederick Conner were granted homesteads on 12 Jan 1835. Their land had once been Spanish land grants and their deeds had to be translated from Spanish into English. In order to claim the land there were rules, one being you had to sleep on your own land for one year. None of them wished to live alone, as the country was still pretty wild. They solved this problem by building one big house, at the spot where all their land adjoined. This house had four rooms with a hall or breezeway down the middle. Each person's room was situated on a corner of his or her land, and they all ate their meals together in the hall. When they retired at night, each one slept in his own room on his own land.
