Research Notes

Parents and Husband

Margery's parents are uncertain. The second will of John Constable, dated 20 December 1472, mentions an unmarried daughter Margaret but does not name a Margery.[1] According to Douglas Richardson[2][3] and Joseph Foster's edition of Yorkshire Visitations,[4] she married Robert Roos. According to Clay's edition of Dugdale's Yorkshire Visitation, her husband was Sir W Roos.[5] Margaret is probably not the same person as Margery.

In addition to Margaret, Foster edition of Yorkshire Visitations lists a daughter of John Constable called Margery who, according to him, married William - not Robert - Holme.[4] So does the Harleian Society edition of Flower's Yorkshire Visitation.[6] Clay's edition of Dugdale's Yorkshire Visitation lists a Margery separately, in addition to Margaret, and names her husband as Robert Holme.[5]

William Richard Cutter in a 1914 book says a Robert Holme of Paul Holme married Margaret, daughter of Sir John Constable of Halsham and Laura FitzHugh.[7] This conflicts with what is said in Visitations, which agree that Margaret's husband had the last name Roos.

The unreliable work Burke's Commoners says that Robert Holme married Marian, daughter of Sir John Constable of Hawsome.[8]

A Selection of Wills from the Resistry at York volume 4 records:

CXVIII. The will of Robert Holme of Paul Holme Esq. [Reg. Test. VI pages 97-98]

August 1, 1503, Robert Holme of Paul Holme, esquier. Note underneath this records:

"The Holmes of Paul Holme were one of the oldest of the Holderness families. The grandfather of the testator John Holmes, of Paulholme, by will dated Sept. 23, 1438, desires to be buried in the churchyard of St. Andrew at Paul ....................................................... The testator was the son of another John Holme. In addition to this will he maked the following dispostiion of his lands. He orders his heir, then a minor, to be under the rule of Sir Robert Sheffield, as he has promised, and directs that, when he is 21, an estate be made to him of lands in Ottringham. After his wife's death, Sir Robert Sheffiedl is to take of the rents of Paulholme for each of the testator's daughters Margery, Lora, and Isabel, 200 marks. HIs sons Ralph, Robert, William and Stephen, are to have the lands which their father has given them in Hedon and Thorgumbald. The testator married Margaret, daughter of Sir John Constable. After his death she became a vowess. (kTest. Eber. iii 363 (see first reference in comment section below) Her will is as follows: "April 2, 1510. Dame Marjore Holme of Palholm in Holderness. To be buried in the where of the church of Pall."

This document notes Robert was married to Margaret, daughter of Sir John Constable then notes after his death she became a vowess. What does the record of her being a vowess., noted in the comment section below say her name was? Margery! What does her will call her? Dame Marjore. So it appears from what is recorded in these documents that Marjory and Margaret are referring to the same person yet the pedigree of John Constable shows them as two separate people.
