Biography

John was born about 1711[1]. He was the son of Reuben Cook and Hannah Atkinson. He passed away in 1777. [2]birth year correction by George Robbins from Family Search April 25, 2023.

CHILDREN: Abraham and Millea were evidently under 21 when John died; they chose Peter Sinclair as their legal guardian. Henry Cook and Zachariah Harmon posted the bond for Peter Sinclair's worthiness in the amount of 1000 pounds! However, many researchers have the date of their birth as being much earlier. Sons Henry, Thomas, and Ephraim Cook were on a road crew in Chatham County, recorded in Aug 1774. We know that Henry was over 21 at his father's death in 1778, as he posted bond for his sister Milly's guardian.

Notes

Some researchers show John born in Virginia in 1711, and others show North Carolina at a later date. More research is needed to establish the correct place and date. There were probably two John Cooks, this one in North Carolina, and another in Virginia.

Executors Henry Cook and Peter Sinclair inventoried John's estate 28 Jan 1777[4], establishing his death before that date.

BIOGRAPHY: John was born in Virginia but this family moved down through Northampton County, North Carolina, which comprised much of North Carolina at one time, and ended up in Chatham. This is the same migration pattern that the Copelands followed. He left his Northampton land to his son Henry.

BIRTH: This John Cook is possibly NOT the son of this Reuben Cook, although the majority of re search indicates that he is. However, Mamie Tate has documentation that a John Cook (possibly Reuben's John) died in Virginia. This John Cook may have been from Essex Co Virginia, original home of one huge Copeland branch.

John was born in 1711. He passed away in 1777.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I am not seeing the connection between John Cook and Christena Cooke (Cooke-3279). The only possible person is Christian Stroud who has a different birth date. Is there a source that would reconcile this relationship?

Cooke I-1 and Cook-5448 appear to represent the same person because: I agree to the merge. There is some dicrepency about this John's line. Read notes on 5448 profile. John Cooke 1 may be this John Cooke's father. Please consider name evaluation.

Cook-14590 and Cook-5448 do not represent the same person because: different century, not the same mothers

I have looked back over the Isle of Wright Cook's by Robert Witt and feel pretty confident that this 8th generation John Cook is the son of 7th generation Reubin Cook who is the son of 6th generation William Cook II. However, this John Cook's birth date is most likely incorrect (too late). Reason being if James his first son was actually born in 1738 then John would have only been 12 years old when he fathered his first child :) The Isle of Wright book dates John's birth around 1680 this may be too early because Reubin and Hannah's recorded marriage was either 1709 or 18 Apr 1717. I think the relations are correct here but the dates are problematic all around. So that being said we need to collectively settle on a birth date or leave it alone. The date on this profile has changed from 1680 to 1711 and now with the newest edit to 1726 . Kelly had the date at 1711 and that seemed like good middle ground. Without a grave marker or a record of birth its a guess anyway.

My notes say "Mamie Tate has documentation that Reuben's son John died in Virginia" so we might be barking up the wrong tree by continuing to look at Reuben. The link to Mamie Tate's information that I wrote down no longer works, unfortunately.

Cook-5448 and Cook-12237 appear to represent the same person because: Spouses match. All eight children of Cook-12237 are listed in the will attached to Cook-5448. Need to reconcile dates and places of birth and death.

The birth date in the bio is different which I believe is the correct birthdate.
