Richard Cook was born in 1817 in Hopewell Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Indiana County with his parents in 1828 to a tract of land where Cookport is located. He built a store on this tract around 1858 and the place was thereafter called "Cookport" [1]
Richard Cook, of near Cookport, died on Friday, of dropsy, aged 77 years. One son and two daughters survive him. The deceased is a descendant of the early settlers of that neighborhood. His remains were interred in the graveyard at East Mahoning Baptist Church.[2]Rev. Kirkendall preached the sermon and delivered the eulogy.[3]
