Biography

James COOK was born about 1800 in North Carolina. His date of death is currently unknown. It was posted that he died about 1850 due to a mortality schedule index for the state of Kentucky, but upon researching the actual images of this schedule it was determined that the only individual of that name listed was in the wrong location and was not old enough to be the same individual as the profiled, James COOK. His parents are currently unknown. He is believed to have been buried in Frank Tackett Cemetery in Pike County, Kentucky however his find a grave listing does not have a death date for him nor a tombstone picture attached to his memorial.

Death Confusion:
Dorothy Cook-Coakley posted a possible mortality schedule source for James COOK in the 1850 Mortality database with images at Family Search on 30 September 2017.[1] However, the only James Cook found in the actual mortality schedule of 1850 was James COOK who died July 1849 in District 2, Shelby, Kentucky of Typhoid Fever. He could not be the correct individual as he is listed in the wrong county and his age was listed as being only 26 years old.[2] In 1850, the profiled James COOK would have been approximately 50 years old and thus cannot be the listed James Cook in Shelby County, Kentucky who was listed as only 26 years old [image looks like 20 or 26 years in age]. As such his date of death has been changed from 1850 to Unknown on 21 November 2017.
Search on 21 November 2017 revealed that James COOK was not listed in the 1850 Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky.
Last known reference currently for a James COOK in Pike County, Kentucky was a request for a license for the marriage between Jonathan HALL and Polly COOK on 28 November 1849.[3]
Possible Family connections
A James COOK was a witness to the marriage between Raleigh HALL and Jane COOK on 1 September 1825 in Pike County, Kentucky. Jane COOK was the daughter of Gang COOK.[4] - Researcher's notes: I have Gang COOK and Caty (unknown maiden name) being possible parents of the James COOK who married Rebecca TACKETT.
A James COOK signed the bond for the marriage of Hugh McKAUGN and Rebecca CARTER on 24 August 1831 in Pike County, Kentucky.[5] He also served as witness to the statement that the bride was over the age of 21 years along with Samuel HALL.
  • Find A Grave Memorial no. 9,930,795, Entry for James COOK (1805 - Unknown), Buried in Frank Tackett Cemetery, Pike County, Kentucky, accessed 21 November 2017. As of 21 November 2017, no tombstone picture had been submitted for this memorial.

James COOK was married on 22 May 1823 in Pike County, Kentucky to Rebecca Hannah TACKETT.[6]

Marriage Bond:[7]
"File No. 42 - License issued May 18, 1823 by Spencer Adkins CPCC for marriage of James Cook and Hannah Tackett. Bond signed by James Cook and John Mullins. May 9, 1823, Wm. Tackitt writes the clerk, certifying that he has 'concented' for James Cook to marry his daughter, Rebeca Tackitt. James Cook and Rebecca Tackett married 22 May 1823 by James Robarts, J. P. P. C."

Rebecca Hannah TACKETT was born on 20 September 1805 and died on 5 March 1846. She was the daughter of William TACKETT and Amy Anna JOHNSON. She is buried in Frank Tackett Cemetery, Pike County, Kentucky.

Children of James COOK and Rebecca Hannah TACKETT:
  1. William COOK
  2. Lucinda COOK (Born: February 1826 in Pike County, Kentucky[8]; Died: Unknown; Married: 27 May 1842 in Pike County, Kentucky to William Riley HALL[9]) William Riley HALL, Jr. is believed to have been the son of William Riley HALL, Sr. (1800 - January 1880) and Nancy HAGENS (1807 - 1902).
  3. Unknown Female Child, Born Between 1825 and 1830.
  4. Unknown Female Child, Born Between 1825 and 1830.
  5. Possible Unknown Female Child, Born Between 1830 and 1835. (this age bracket had 2 individuals in it in 1840, but one of the children listed in the 1830 household who were born between 1825 and 1830 was missing in 1840. It is possible that this individual was the same as the last child listed born between 1825 and 1830 in the previous census record.
  6. Unknown Female Child, Born Between 1830 and 1835.
  7. Unknown Female Child, Born Between 1835 and 1840

A James COOK requested a license for the marriage between Jonathan HALL and Polly COOK on 28 November 1849.[13] The letter was attested by Sanders MULLINS and Jefferson FLEMING. This letter was obviously attached to file no. 1092, the marriage bond for the marriage between Jonathan HALL, Jr. and Miss Polly COOK who were married on 6 September 1850. Polly COOK was listed as a daughter of Jas. COOK on the transcription of this file number.[14]

Research Progress

1830 United States Federal Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky, Household of James COOK[15]

1 Free White Male Aged 5 to 10 Years
1 Free White Male Aged 20 to 30 Years
3 Free White Females Aged Under 5 Years
1 Free White Female Aged 20 to 30 Years
RESEARCHER's NOTES:
Male Child listed as aged 5 to 10 years was probably William COOK
Male listed as 20 to 30 Years old was definitely James COOK.
Female listed as aged 20 to 30 Years old was probably James COOK's wife of record, Rebecca Hannah TACKETT.
The identities of the three female children under 5 years are currently unknown [21 November 2017]. If they survived to adulthood perhaps their identity might be discovered in marriage bonds and / or death records for the area.

1840 United States Federal Census Record of Pike County, Kentucky, Household of James COOK[16]

Household in 1840:
1 Free White Male Aged 15 to 20 Years
1 Free White Male Aged 30 to 40 Years
3 Free White Female Aged Under 5 Years
2 Free White Females Aged 5 to 10 Years

10 Total Individuals, 2 Individuals Engaged in Agriculture.
RESEARCHER's NOTES:
Total count off, only unclear number in the household was the Free White Females Under 5 years. I read it originally as a 1, but the only amount for this number that would reflect the total individuals listed on the second page of the census record as 10 would have been if this age bracket had 3 individuals inside of it.
