A New COOK Family Begins... with Tragedy A family legend has a John A. COOK going AWOL from the military in Scotland, changing his name from "LAURE" to "COOK" and moving to Canada. He choose “Cook” because of the famous explorer, Capt. Cook. The story goes that he claimed to be related to Madam Melba (opera singer born in Australia whose parents were from Scotland) and Annie Laurie (inspiration for the Scottish song "Annie Laurie") . Wife, Son, Edmund COOK, age 6, of New Brunswick, Canada
Wife, Son, William COOK, age 5, of New Brunswick, Canada
Wife, Son, John Jr. COOK, age 3, of New Brunswick, Canada
1897, his youngest daughter, Nelly, 16, was supposed to marry a salesman from Boston. She got on the train in Moncton but never got off in Boston. The family was notified by the man in Boston. Her unmarried brothers John, 19, William, 21, and Edmond, 22, went to Boston to try to find her and were never heard from again. That year, the oldest and now only surviving son, Walter COOK, will leave his wife and 4 yr old son to travel to Boston, probably to also find his siblings, which he never did. Whatever happened, he eventually called for his family the next year, to live with him in Boston, traveling by boat. John A. COOK now has effectively lost all his children in one year. In two more years, he will loose his wife, Betzie BOOTH and now totally alone, will die a year later. Whatever happened to his four youngest children is still a mystery. And a sad ending to a man who decided to go AWOL. [9][7][8] Also recorded under Cook Family Mysteries
