Biography

Fred met Eva when he was in Chicago for the World's Fair (obtaining a divorce from Alice). Eva was a school teacher in South Dakota at the time, from Illinios. Fred told his children that Cook's County Illinios is named for her family. Plankinton SD, Aurora County

BUCHANAN County

Judy Lawrence was in possesion of a photo of many Cook brothers, brothers of Eva. She thinks that they were from New England. This photo was lost in a house fire in 1998 Duplicates may exist.

From Lettie Lawrence Trevarthan: Gramdma came to Conklin from Plankinton S.D. when she married in the early 1900's. She was born in Jessup Iowa. (tml: family history says LaGrange Ill) Her family moved West from Vermont. I was told that Cook County Illinois was named for her family, but I have never seen documentation of this. The birth places of her siblings are scattered along the path west, so apparently they stayed for periods of time at various places along the way. She was a school teacher in S.D. She graduated from Dakota Weslyan University which was uncommon for a woman at that time. She taught in a one room school house. I think of her school as quite like the Little House on the Prairie TV show as it was set at about that same time. I also remember hearing that when she was a young girl her mother would set pies on the window sill of their home and Indians would steal them.

More from Lettie: I once heard that she and Grandpa were in Chicago on their way east after their marriage at the time of the Chicago fire. I think I once checked the dates and decided that was not true. (tml-fire was 1871) I will check that again. I do know that she had one brother and one sister. Her step brother Irvin was killed in the accident that almost killed my father shortly before I was born. As I remember the story she met Grandpa when he was in South Dakota to divorce his first wife. She promised her father that she would not marry Grandpa while her father was alive. When her father died Grandpa went back there and they were married.
