John, son of Levi and Sarah "Sallie" (Nigh) Cook, was born in Illinois in 1849. He was the brother of Matilda, Nancy, Charles, Cynthia, and Daniel. His father was a blacksmith in Cumberland County, Illinois. John married Caroline Huston on August 12, 1876. Their children were John, Jr., and Lillie May Cook.
John's second marriage was to Dorothy Waller Harris on June 15, 1882. Their three daughters were Nora, Cora Alice, and Nancy. In 1990, John and Dorothy were living in Champaign, Illinois, where John was working as a farm laborer. In 1920, they were living in Edgar County, Illinois, and John was doing street construction. John died in 1927.
