Biography

Name

Name: Elizabeth Unknown.[1]
She is not Elizabeth (or Ellen) Cooke as can be found online.
Elizabeth Ellen Cooke: A number of genealogies indicate that her surname is not known. Geni calls her Cooke, and claims royal descent for her mother Joane Coplestone. Elizabeth Ellen Cooke was born circa1603 in Sheffield, West Riding, Yorkshire, England[2] Elizabeth married William Backus circa 1627 aged 20? in Sheffield, West Riding, Yorkshire, England. Husband William born 1606, would have been aged 21. Parish records (no source) show Elizabeth dying February 9, 1643 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England and buried at Sheffield Cathedral. [3][4]

Birth

Born: About 1605.
Estimate based on her marriage about 1627.

Marriage and Children

Married: William Backus about 1627 (based on birth of Sarah in August 1628). This was presumably in or near Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, though no marriage record has been found.
Children of William Backus and Elizabeth Unknown:[1]
  1. Sarah Backus, was baptized 31 August 1628 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. She married John Reynolds, of Norwich. Sarah died 22 July 1702 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut Colony.
  2. (Unnamed infant) Backus was born say 1630 in Sheffield. He was buried 7 January 1630/31 in Sheffield.
  3. Mary Backus was baptized 6 May 1632 in Sheffield. . She married Benjamin Crane. Mary died 8 July 1717.
  4. William Backus jr. (Lieutenant ) was baptized 30 November 1634 in Sheffield. He died April 1721.
  5. Lydia Backus was baptized 31 December 1637 in Sheffield. She married John Bayley. Lydia died June 1696.
  6. (Unnamed infant) Backus He was buried 28 December 1640 in Sheffield. Possibly a twin of Stephen?
  7. Stephen Backus was baptized 3 January 1641 in Sheffield.

Death

Buried: 9 February 1643 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.[1]

Common Errors to Avoid

Incorrect parents: It can be found on the internet that her name was Elizabeth or Ellen and that her LNAB was Cooke. They also make her the daughter of Christopher Cooke and his wife Joan Coplestone. This is all incorrect.
There is no evidence that Christopher Cooke had a daughter Elizabeth or Ellen. Also the dates make it almost impossible for the wife of William Backus to have been a daughter of Christopher Cooke. There is also the problem that the origins of William Backus has been shown to be in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England where he and Elizabeth baptized their children.
Her name is properly Elizabeth Unknown.
Falsely attributed children found on Geni.com:
  • John Backus, b. before February 28, 1619; [ Was Elizabeth aged 12 ?] at United Kingdom; Died February 28, 1619 in United Kingdom Infant death.
  • Thomas Backus, b. March 24, 1620, at United Kingdom; Died 1629 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom Died Young.
  • Ellen Backus circa 1623 at United Kingdom, Died 1626 in United Kingdom died young.
  • Elizabeth Backus, b. circa 1626, at United Kingdom;, d. 1631 in United Kingdom died young.

The PGM project received the following via private message : "I was not sure who to reach out to, but I was in the process of working on my Crane family line and found out that the project has this profile protected Unknown-430447|Elizabeth (Unknown) Backus. I was working on Benjamin Crane's wife, Mary Backus parents and found out that there is a lot of miss information out there, however according to one of my sources Mary's Mother is stated to be Sarah Charles. I have attached the web address for the source below. Has this person been ruled out by the project and this is why her mothers name as Elizabeth? I am going to start confirming this mother, however, I wanted to reach out as well. Please let me know if this may help."

Disconnecting incorrect parents. Her LNAB needs to changed to Unknown.

Cooke-1397 and Cook-3501 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse, Cooke-1397 appears to be best choice for LNAB

Hi Jackie.

Do you have any actual parish record citations, fax. copy or URL, to contribute?

There is so much conflicting information relating our Will and Lizzy, one would like to see more "proofs" of their Yorkshire time and events. GENIE even carries several other children, they attribute to Will and Lizzy that would suggest that he was 13/14 and she 12/14 at first birth, Will and Lizzy would have bee both children at the time...biologically possible but highly unlikely. When one considers Willl's apprenticeship, normally 6/7 years, from age 11/12, this would suggest that Will would not have married/born children until some years after completion of the apprenticeship...year 1627 for the marriage sounds right. he would have been about 21, working at the time, and had money to consider a wife and family.
