Source: John Ruddell of the Shenandoah Valley:His Children and Grandchildren by Harold T.Smutz, June 1974. Re John Ruddell and Neal Cook, Blanche Hinshaw, Indianapolis,IN, reported on some research done for Colleen Lofrese by ThomasA. Urbine Jr, Ridley Park, PA on the Nottingham Records in the Chester Co, PA.

Historical Society in 1972, John Ruddell, under different spellings, was listed on the tax rolls 1718 thru 1740; those for 1741 thru 1747 had been lost. He was not listed for 1748, presumably by then, or earlier, he had moved to Virginia.

On 3-18-1727 John Rudell witnessed the will of Samuel Littler, and on 7-28-1727 that of Hugh Morgan, both of Nottingham. In proving the latter,John Cook and Robert Oldham made their marks but John Ruddell signed his name.

The Nottingham Land Papers, also in the Chester Co Historical Society, showed that the lots, when originally granted were thought to be in PA, then when the Mason-Dickson Line was run, parts of them were found to be in MD. James and WM. Brown from New Castle, DE, were the first settlers in the area .Later they brought others of the Quaker faith to Nottingham and Penn granted the lots to this group.

Lot 33 was granted to Wm. Brown 30 Mar 1702, John Ruddell bought it from him 24 Oct 1721, and sold half of it to Francis Moore 29 Sept 1745, probably in preparation for his move. He had sold 257 acres to his brother-in-law John Cook 22 May 1724.By 1789, through other transactions, the land was in the possession of Wm.Rogers/or his heirs.

Thomas Rogers in his will, named a son William.

Capt John Haines, USN(Ret) researched for BH,(above)in July 1972, the Gilbert Cope records in the Society files. Cope worked as early as 1861 and thru 1904, compiling the Chester Co. Quaker Monthly Meeting Records. In Vol. 9 p. 69 he found an affidavit of Neal Cook: "Neal Cook, aged 78 of Cecil Co. MD.,Testifies on oath May 26, 1735,Respecting Lord Baltimore's Fort: came into New Castle County and went to live near Christians Creek about 1684, where he remained about 40 years before going to Maryland. The log house called Lord Baltimore's Fort stood but a little distance from the common road which led from the place where he lived to New Castle; which road he constantly traveled to church and court for near to 40 years. Made his mark."

Neal Cookhaving testified under oath was evidently not a Quaker, as the Quaker discipline would permit affirmation only. Will: Will Bk v. II, p 27. Chester Co. PA dated 24 Feb 1737 names wife and
